Rsf Racing - Ducati Trioptions Cup

Discussion in 'Racing & Bike Sport' started by Spence, Jan 7, 2018.

  1. Is it just me or does @scrawnsenior look a bit more burly and less scrawny this year? :)

  2. Nah, just the gear I think pal. Still the same skinny old me, can't afford to put any bulk on. Slows me down.

  6. Ducati Trioptions Cup, Round 3 - Donington Park National

Having raced here at the beginning of the year, we arrived with confidence to push and a circuit that we really enjoy.

The practice plan didn’t survive contact. We were already going faster than previous visit but unfortunately had a small crash. Ending our session. Getting the bike back we found that the engine casings had smashed, as well as the normal pegs and clip ons. With the bike rebuilt we got out for the qualifying session and had a good few laps with the front runners but loosing the tow we came in trying to save tyre life. Ended up Qualifying 21st.

Race 1 was a race of 2 halves.

Starting in 21st, we knew we had our work cut out. Race start was good but found ourselves on inside with no where to go. Having some great battles throughout the race. With a few crashes then a big one in front of us saw the race red flagged.

The race was then restarted with a 5 lap dash! Starting 18th we had another good start and had a great race throughout with Matt Stevens. He held us off the points over the line by 0.1.... so close but no cigar. Fair play and great racing. Took another 0.8 secs of PB so going the right direction for Race 2.

Race 2 looked to be dry, but as we left the awning the heavens opened. With the wets already left for the grid, we had to do a slow and sketchy lap of donny in the pouring rain on drys! With a change on the grid by Roy and Andy, we put some guess settings in and went for it. The lights went out for the race and we got a cracking start going from 16th to 7th by the first corner. The race started with a great few laps with the front pack, but with a few big slides we settled into a comfortable pace. Keeping an eye on the pit board we managed to finish P9!

Absolutely chuffed to have finished in the top 10 and now be on the points table with 7. Cannot wait now for Brands Gp in 3 weeks time. Now we’ve tasted the points... we want more!

Massive thanks to all sponsors and supporters that make this happen. Also massive thanks to The old man Roy and Andy for pit getting us racing Sunday!

  8. Ducati Trioptions Cup, Round 4 - Brands Hatch GP

Having left Donington Park on a massive high and in the points we felt confident for Brands GP. Having never raced or even ridden the GP circuit, we knew we had a massive learning curve ahead.

Practice - Was planned to get as many laps and a tow and learn the track as fast as we can with just a 20 minute session. Following some of the guys that had been here before, we quickly learnt how fast it was. With the session complete and 11 laps under our belt, we knew we would have to change the gearing and go and ask some suspension advice from The Ktech truck.

Qualifying - Fresh rubber in, new gearing on and suspension tweaked we looked to build on the free practice session. With another 9 laps of the circuit done we managed to take another 2 secs off our FP time, placing us 23rd on the grid for race 1. With still more time to find, the lack in confidence with the set up was hindering moving forward.

Race 1 - Heading out on the sighting lap, Drizzle started to appear on our visors. The race started and was straight into the mix and holding our own. 2 laps in and the drizzle had actually turned into rain out on the back section of the track. The race was red flagged and all riders headed to the pit. The race was declared a wet race, but with the track temperature and the sun peaking through the clouds he majority stuck with dry tyres. The race restart went well, but still not feeling confident with the suspension settings times went down but not enough, loosing the group in front. Having a lonely race and finishing 20th.

Over night we made more changes, spring change and air gap change on front forks with the hope we will find the sweet spot. Thanks to Daniel Couzens and team.

Race 2 - Starting 20th on the grid for this race, the aim was just to improve lap time and get closer again to the points. The race started well staying with some good racers, but then with a false neutral on back straight nearly making a visit to the gravel. lap times went up, but held our own to finish in 18th.

Overall the weekend was not a complete disaster. We had a mixture of weather conditions and trying to find a comfortable suspension setting for the fast and undulating circuit was difficult. Improving lap times each session was good, but was not where we wanted to be but to bring the bike home was a success. Got to take the positives and move on, come back fighting at the next round. Get well soon to all those that crashed this weekend.

We now have 4 weeks off, ready for round 5 at Snetterton circuit, Norfolk.

Would like to thank all that had helped, pit crewed, offered support, and guided us throughout the weekend. Couldn't have done it without you all.

  9. Ducati Trioptions Cup, Round 5 - Snetterton

Leaving Brands Hatch behind us a month ago, we set to have a good result at Snetterton. With no settings or set up, due to the engine failure here last year got to firstly thank Odiham motorcycle club for allowing us to join them on a trackday to get head upto speed and try a few things.

Free practice - Didn’t start well with a big slide, due to running some old scrubs on first lap. Plan changed somewhat just to get some laps in and build speed and lower lap times. That went to plan but not as fast as we wanted. So was back to the drawing board for set up issues.

Qualifying - With the rain beating down all night, the track looked wet. So we went with the decision to go to the track on wets, if it dried do wheel change in pit lane. On arriving in pit lane could tell the wrong tyre choice was made. 2 laps and we had to come in for a change. The wheels were changed by the team and we managed to get back out for a outlap and 1 flying lap. The time wasn’t great but got us on the grid for the race in P20.

Race 1 - lining up on the grid in P20 we knew we had work cut out. The aim as always was to be in the points. The start went well but got beat up a bit into turn 1 and 2. Elbows were out and places were made up. Had some great battles early on with Danny Shaw then Craig Kennely. Having made a couple of mistakes a gap was formed but having seen P16 on lap board, points were in sight. Couple laps later we were battling again and position changes 2/3 times a lap. Made for a really exciting race and to come home in P14 with points was a success.

Race 2 - Starting 15th on the grid, we felt we were in the right place to go with the pack. After a good start it was again a chasing game and laps of passing. 4 laps in the dreaded arm pump came in and was struggling to change gear, but pushed onto stay ahead of the pack behind and finish again in 14th.

"It’s been a great weekend and taking points in both races was mega! A massive thanks go to the team this weekend that got me on the grid and kept me going. Roll on Cadwell Park!"

What a rollercoaster of a weekend on the iconic Cadwell Park that was. Read below....

Free practice - Went well building confidence in what was a very wet track at beginning. And was very happy with damp/wet pace. With the track drying, made the call to come in and not kill another set of tyres.

Qualifying - Friday night qualifying was cancelled due to horrendous monsoon weather and moved to first thing Saturday morning. Strategy to safe tyres came in. Waiting for track to dry enough to get a couple of flying laps in at end of the session. We got out and were only able to post one flying lap which left us back in 18th.... but had fresh as could be tyres for the race.

Race 1 - Had a cracking start from 18th and felt good sat in 14th for first few laps. Then with pushing hard, the arm pump kicked in and the remainder of the race was real struggle. Unable to brake hard for chicane, ran the grass and lost vital point positions. Finishing in P17. Not great result but with some discussions felt we could change a few things on bike to try in warm up.... yep you heard it right a warm up!!!

Warm up - It was dry and the bike was running a lot better on the different gearing. The suspension changes though were wrong. It was like riding a bucking bronco, but was great to understand and learn how the changes effected the ride. So back to more what we knew plus a couple of clicks.

Race 2 - Another great start from 18th into 10th into first corner. Then the battle was on hanging onto the top boys, battling for few laps holding ground in 13th. But the dreaded arm pump kicked in, giving people the opportunity into braking zones. And which one rider took, a very late over take into the chicane making us have to run the slip road loosing out on 4 positions. The fight was then on in last few laps to try get back in points. The chase was on and fastest laps of weekend being the last 2. Taking places back we finished 15th taking one vital point.

Overall been a frustrating weekend, but lots of positives from it. We’ve tried lots and found out what works and what doesn’t. We also know we have the pace at beginning of race, just to resolve the arm pump issue for the next round at Assen and be firmly in there points.

Massive thanks to all sponsors and supporters that make this happen. Also massive thanks to The old man Roy and all at Sam Cox Racing for helping over weekend!

  16. Ducati Trioptions Cup Round 7 - TT Circuit Assen

What a place! Having only visited Assen once before to race, we couldn’t wait to pack and get on the road there.

Free practice - putting in the settings we had from last year, hope was there to get straight into the same pace. Not sure why but it wasn’t to be....This track is fast and requires huge amount of trust in the bike, tyres and bravery into some of the corners. Finishing free practice, we knew we had to make some changes to make the bike a bit easier to ride with suspension and gearing changes.

Qualifying - Few hours later we were back out and into qualifying. 4 laps were completed but bike wasn’t reacting well to setting changes. Couple changes again and back out again for another 4 laps finishing faster, but still down in 23rd.

Race 1 - With not a great start, we had our work cut out. The race was full of passes and daring moves. Places were made but race was red flagged due to a bike down and water all over track. The bike was running well and fast through the speed traps, but trying too hard didn’t make it flow. Taking a point in 15th due to some disqualifications isn’t how we like to get points... but will take it.

Race 2 - Got a good start and made a few places into turn one. Getting stuck in from the off got a couple of good laps in and fastest lap we’ve ever done round Assen. Then it happened, due to a bike malfunction I was highsided to the moon and came down hard. The bike cart wheeled away and the race was put under safety car whilst the bike and rider were recovered. With a quick visit to the medical Center, it was confirmed that a broken hand was sustained as well as numerous bumps and scrapes. Glad to be wearing a top kit from sponsors RST and Xlite. Definitely done their job and kept us safe!

This weekend has been really tough. With this crash looks to be a season ender. The hand now in a cast and the bike needing to be fully stripped and every bit and bolt checked, we won’t be able to race at the last round of the season.... but means we can start to plan for next season now.

I cannot thank all the sponsors and supporters enough that make this happen. It’s been a great year getting points and that was the aim of the season and hope to have done you proud.

Also massive thanks to The old man Roy, Iain, Monty helping in pit and on the grid. But also everyone in the paddock that helped or gave advice over the weekend. The paddock has some top guys in it!

Season report to follow soon. Once we’ve gathered our thoughts and decided where this crash is going to take us.
