I miss the time when riding 2 strokes with less engine parts, minimal electrics and none of electronics at all.
Yeah, and those seat belt thingies in cars, definitely dangerous. I mean if you can't hold yourself back from going through the windshield you shouldn't be driving
my 2014 PP had a weird one when i first got it. middle of france it suddenly cut out. finally started and then couldn't turn it off had to disconnect the battery. spent the rest of the trip having to take seat off every time i wanted to stop/start. back in the UK, dealer didn't have a clue but was finally tracked down to a dodgy relay or something that cost a £5. under warranty at the time thank god.
That could be a possible initial cause as well as Funners replied on other thread, but in my case, I believe it was the switch, specifically the start button contact. I found it out of place, couldn't really see what's behind, but sprayed contact cleaner all over and fitted back in the way that worked fine for many times I tested. Something that holds it in place might be snapped, don't know. What makes me think it was that and not the relay in my case was the fact that even the steering lock was playing up when the thing turned off, as if the button was stuck on. I just finished putting all together. The throttle body was the truly nightmare to fit the spring back, but it is all in one piece now. Very tempted to do a road test before a new switch arrives. The weather is just perfect for that, proper British weather, I mean. If the bike tolerates that, it will be fine and the root cause found. Still in deep grieve with the dealer, though .
Yeah I know how to bypass or remove. Point is, an ST4 still has such safety devices. A side stand cut out is actually a good safety measure. I’d be lying if I said I’d never set off with my side stand down.
I carry a sidestand bypass dongle to get me home if mine ever fails. It lives under the seat but I'd rather know I have the safety of the cutout.
Still reluctant to take the bike out after put switch together, decided to fit the new clutch slave cylinder as the original packed up 2 weeks ago. Have to say, well done Oberon. Fit perfectly with less parts than the original and it feels lighter. I went directly to Oberon in Havant and collected it straight from assembly line. 2 ladies working in a desk packed with parts asked me which color I wanted, picked the body, piston, seals, grease and put together in front of me. Other lady put into the package with leaflet info and off I went. Just got off the phone (14.14hrs, Saturday 28th) with a mate who's Mutley PP has just cut out on him just North of Reims. Had just engaged his cruise control and suddenly bike cut out! Luckily with another mate who's assisting him. They've both been riding in atrocious weather since yesterday but the Mut has failed.! I've passed on the info from all the aforementioned and directed him to the Ducati Reims shop to see if they can assist. Told him to wear strong underwear as he'll likely get rodgered senseless shortly..!! (£££££££££.!) I'll keep you updated.
We needed a Ducati dealer in Italy during our trip. The dealer refused payment and wished us a good trip.
My mate got his bike to Ducati Reims. Diagnostic check found... Wait for it.... Eff all.! Nothing found... wtf.? Hopefully, someone, somewhere will find the cause before we hear something worse than coasting to the roadside....
That's why I was so afraid of taking the bike to P&H and pay in advance for a diagnostic! I put the bike back on the road today after being reluctant to it before new switch arrives. Rode very carefully on left lane, but few miles on, F#*k it! Rode like stole it and the bike is fine! Went up to P&H, showed the video to a few there and they were all shocked. (obviously). As the bike hit 9,300miles on the way (it was warning service coming few days ago), I spoke with service team and told them I wanted to cancel the diagnosis appointment but would like to keep the booking for a routine service instead. They were OK with that! Asked the check list on this type of service, it's just like other annual service check up (engine oil, filter, chain tension and lube, other small lubrifications, blah, blah, blah), what I've done myself during the annual services by date, not mileage apart from resetting the dash warning light. £270.00!! It that right?! As I run the service by date last month, I only needed a service light reset and their fancy stamp on the service book. No way! And again, I can't see a routine service picking up or antecipating a fault like this.
My starter switch failed and I stripped it down at Bury hill and tried to bridge the connections on the circuit board to get it started but alas I could not as it is a Canbus sytem which runs at 5 volts and using a paper clip would not work, starter switch £68 cured it, even though it was playing up some weeks prior to it's failure
Rover, Ducati have switched to annual servicing now (a few years back) rather than purely based on mileage. My understanding was that if you have a receipt to show its just had an oil service due to mileage, the annual service should be inspection only. You need someone to confirm this for you though, obviously. If you just need the service light reset, no dealer will do this for you without doing the service too. Do a search on here, lots of posts regarding service light reset. You might be able to do this yourself with a cable and melcodiag. I cant remember if this is possible for a DVT bike yet, maybe someone else can confirm.
Hi John, Thanks. Yes, I remember reading a thread about reseting service light. I found someone who would do it for me for £25. And would run diagnostic and clear errors for £48. They are in Chichester, so not too far from you as well.
Rover, that good news. I could do with that info if you want to PM it to me, a mate is about to do the belts on his DVT
Hi all, MONO MOTORCYCLES. https://monomotorcycles.co.uk/ Just popped in for a service light reset. Job done before I could have a seat in the reception. One of the friendliest and tidiest small garages I ever been. During resetting, when they tried to turn the bike on, the bloody switch (yes, the infamous switch that I have not replaced yet), played again shutting the dash and they tested the battery and run a scan, finding no errors (the job P&H wanted to charge me £150.00 initially). I explained the situation with the switch, the bike started again after few attempts. Then I was charged £25.00 + VAT for the resetting. The errors search and the warmly reception cost me 0 + a hand shake. Guess who will do the 18K miles belts and service? I'd rather do it with someone who is growing the business and learning than with those who call themselves Ducati "specialists".
