1098 Greasy Slipper

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Robarano, Oct 5, 2019.

  1. I got up early this morning to watch MotoGP qualifying and found myself with a spare couple of hours this morning. :bucktooth:

It popped into my head that in the 4 years I've had the 1098R, the slipper has never been apart. So I thought I'd do a bit of maintenance, cleaning and greasing.

Cover Off. Not too bad, a little surface rust on the bearing. Removed the plate and the bearing is running freely with no notchiness.

Pressure plate off and the spider is intact, to my relief.

    Clutch plates out.

Some wear on the basket, but the side surfaces aren't too grooved. It's made to look a little worse with the knurled metal over the top of the side faces into the basket. IMG_8531.JPG

And similar with the drum. It looked worn, but once I started to clean it, the black lines came straight off revealing some slight wear and grooving but it is serviceable. IMG_8534.JPG

All of the grease on the ball bearings was gone and they fell straight out when I removed the drum. Regreased the ball bearing sites and refitted the drum. IMG_8535.JPG

Greased the spider legs to allow them to runn freely over the drum. IMG_8540.JPG

  3. Looks like a ton of grease. It will fly out under centrifugal force and splatter everywhere.
    ....in my opinion.

I could have posted pictures of that, but I don't really like posting loads of pics. :no_mouth:

  7. I remember the first time i serviced the slipper clutch on my 1098 Tricolore.

Felt really pleased with myself as i put the fairing back on...... then i noticed the ball bearings sitting in the ‘safe place’ where i’d put them whilst i cleaned the parts.....

  8. I think we are trying to provide advice to prevent problems.
I have always used a touch of molybdenum grease on the ball ramps and spider spring tabs. Never had a problem using that.

Good work but too much and the wrong type of grease. This is the one you need (or equivalent) specific to high loads, shock load or vibration conditions. Typical applications include plain bearings, sliding rails and socket joints which is exactly as found in the slipper clutch.
I did the same job last weekend, but unlike you I was too inconsiderate to upload pics to the forum!

  10. everyone else so far has been right...

  11. And I'm sure it'll be fine. I'll sleep tonight.

This forum seem to be full of life's natural worriers. I expect Greta will be on soon giving me stick for using oil based grease.

  14. You'll be lucky. Greta's saving the world & has no time to worry about your greasy clutch!

Whats the forum reccomended interval for doing this? Once a year or X miles, whichever comes first?

  15. That other stuff will wear out quicker than a cheap suit, I have had to replace a number of cheap suits already this year!
