996 Replace Fairing Vs Respray

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Richrox986, Oct 8, 2019.

  1. The body work on my 2001 996 is showing it's age. I'd like to return to mint. My thoughts are to have it resprayed.

What are peoples thoughts or experiences on the options?

    • Re-spraying the exisitng fairing and tank
    • Buying second hand parts which are undamaged
    • Buying after market replicas?

  2. To keep it original with the correct date stamps on the mouldings then respray.
    If track use then aftermarket.
You will struggle to buy mint, matching originals and will never know if they have been respirated before anyway.

  4. Has anyone had any panels resprayed? any recommendations gratefully received.

  5. If they're not badly scratched, or chipped, it may be possible to get a bodywork specialist to give them a professional buff and polish - like they do in showrooms, where they don't replace, or respray fairings, but often get them looking shinier than when they were new.

  6. Try Racepaint in Nottingham or many recommend Rage Designs in Warrington.
I guess it depends where you live...

  12. I'm going back 30 years or more , but there was a company called Dream Machine in Nottingham that were reckoned to be the very best for restoring bike paintwork to original condition .

I wonder if there is a connection between those firms ?

  13. Dream machine are still around I believe.
I’m pretty sure Terry at Race paint is ex Dream machine

  16. Dream machine over the years seem to be very hit and miss on their paint jobs. Another option could be a vinyl wrap? we have quite a few in here who have tried them

  17. My respraying was done by an outfit called Paint Monkey at the Taunton end of Devon.
They did a superb, better than new job, using ImageWorks decals. Super impressed.
