Having had a standard type Ohlins shock I have always felt they offer a massive improvement over the standard showa units since my days of 748 riding. I have always managed to resist the full fork upgrade, having had a few sets resprung etc and seemed to work pretty well. I mean Ohlins cant be that much better, right? Just bling isnt it? Now I'm no riding god and feel isn't really in my armoury, but.... I have now had a couple of rides on mine, 1198S forks all standard spring etc. set to factory, and ok cold so oil probably not working too well, felt really hard and started to wonder if they were 'all that'. Having changed out the rear for a TTX which has a much heavier spring and has recently been serviced, perfect for my higher than average weight, again on std settings I was out the seat more than in it! Now for me this is where Ohlins comes into its own. I decided to take two clicks off front and rear, both comp and reb, and see what its like. What a transformation! Not only does it ride and track well, again ok not really been pushing that hard on the road in these conditions and not yet track tested, no running wide and steers easily as it should, but now seems to glide over imperfections (read potholes!) like a top spec Jag coasting down a cobbled street. So, am I happy with the £1300 I spent on used kit, the time and effort it took to fit and the messing with lost bits and stuff? Hell yeah. I am now a firm convert and never again shall I have a Ducati sportsbike (my main bike) without Ohlins. Likely I wont have any other type without the, either! mega happy
I'm waiting for funds to find out what all the ohlins fuss is about, everyone seems to say the same about ohlins.
Do I want to fit these to my bike...? Hmmmmmm...? Guess 1098/1198 triples wont fit, so it's a case of machining mine out?
Are you saying that you can get O-rings from Yamaha which fit the Ducati Ohlins ? I did read somewhere that Suzuki GSX1000 O rings were also the same and lasted longer.
I also read the other day that some TTX shocks can be revalved without taking them apart. Is this true?
I have no idea, but the fact the adjusters are both at the top makes it so easy. Can't wait to try this on track, few clicks firmer and start from there
What exactly needs changing to convert the standard 848 Showa forks to the 1098 Ohlins. Do you need the lower clamp from the 1098 as well ?
Yes you can. But you may well have to fit them yourself, the Ducati dealer that i use wouldn't fit anything other than genuine Ohlins seals.
No the 1098/1198 lower clamp has a different stem fitted. It's shorter and screwed in, the 848 is longer and pressed in. You'll need to be more creative ;-)
Bike looks good Bradders, to convert to S model forks Ducati do a kit Ian, is that what you used Bradders? Or you could fit FGRT forks with 30mm carts as standard and more adjustment than you can poke a stick at, carts can be removed without too much effort too.. and you get milled lowers and tapered fork tubes Oh and fits the standard yoke etc..
Nope I bought a the yokes and stem to match off the guy who sold me the forks, got a good deal ;-) I think tho they were a kit as he bought the lot new from I think pro twins. Ian - But 1*98 lower yoke and stem is all you need, simple swap job. Oh and some spacers for calipers as bolts are 5mm too long on Showa....or do what I did and buy 55mm ti bolts
I have looked at the new ohlins kit Dan Kyle sells thru ebay, far cheaper than Uk but....dreaded import duty! Happy with these so far
Sounds good, think Roy has the propper Ducati yoke kit, if I'm right his lower yoke is CNC billet then the OEM top..
Mine is oem top. Thinking about it, the bottom did look billet. I know the guy paid over 2500 for them fitted
The 1098/1198 yoke don't fit the 848. Ducati put the spacers in so the bolts fit the two different sized discs used on the 848 and 1098 depending if you put the spacer under or on top of the calliper.
