Hi @John W Since I have the Scorpion Trail 2, I took the opportunity to spin them (literally) on a few dirt roads. Why not, as the saying goes, If you got it, use it. I wont be doing that with the Angels once I mount them for next season. All and all, the OEM Scorpion Trail 2 are good for what they are but other than what I mentioned above, I stick to tarmac riding. They are starting to show mileage but at 7500 kms, they are not yet to the point of hitting the wear indicators. Best guess...another 1000 Kms. I'm hoping the Sport Touring Pirelli's will last longer than this. A positive surprise is that they wear relatively evenly with the front tire. I've never had this happen before. Perhaps it's a Multistrada thing.
A route in Portugal downloaded from RIDE magazine... Do they actually ride these or just plot them going by what their mapping software says? Garmin doesn't exclude this with avoid unpaved roads selected, was wondering why Google Maps was trying to avoid it... The Road5s coped fine
google maps seems to treat them as either seasonal or restricted access. Garmin does for some too, but not all. That looks like quite a solid road. We rode a bunch of trails similar to those in the pyrenees last year, plus some very sandy ones by the coast. Garmin wanted to route us around (20 miles of dirt vs ~50 of tarmac. We did the dirt ). DarR, I can only dream of getting that many miles out of a tyre. I get ~3k miles (5k kms) tops out of a rear, but then I am 2 up on most tours. I also finish a rear before a front, so they usually get replaced independent of each other. I will be interested to hear your feedback on the pirellis.
With the exception of the Supercorsa's which I melted on the Monster, I seem to get at least 6000, maybe 7000 kms out of the rear regardless of what I mount. These OEM Scorpion Trail 2's are somewhat better but only marginally. I average 165 lbs "Au Natural", ride alone and in probably colder weather than you do. Perhaps that makes a difference. I'm hoping the Angel GT's will last twice as far as the ST2's. If I have to change tires each season, I might as well mount Rosso 3's or even Rosso Corsa 2's.

hey, I always like to read a good Tyre thread & would just like to say that having tried lots of different makes over far too many years to remember. I've settled for my first ever Ducati, a MTS1200S M2017, which is also the first bike I've purchased brand new & it's a cracking bike. I'm not a fair wether rider & commute daily on a 24 mile round trip, I run an annual bike tour of around 1500 miles each May & get out as many Sundays as possible when work permits. Regarding tyres, the OE set of Pirellis both went at 6000 miles, as did all brake pads & Chain & Sprockets. they must be all made of toffee. @nd set of Tyres I went for Roadtec 01's which got me up to 14000 miles. I've now gone on to try Road5's as I want to compare them with the roadtec 01's. I'm getting what I consider good rear mileage given my commuting & I do like to use the power where possible so don't give the tyre too easier life. However the fronts scallop real bad & affect handling way before the centre get's worn down. It happened also on PR3's & PR4's I've had on a previous road bike. I just don't get this scolloping thing. In my Avon Roadrunner days (showing my age now), I can't remember ever having it as a problem. They just wore out evenly. I'm now on 19000 & tyres still looking good. I just need to see how the tyres perform & wear over the winter months.
You mention Avon. I'm on my second set of Avon 3Dxm's. Excellent grip wet or dry, I got 8000 miles out of my last set riding at a decent pace, and they are noticeably cheaper than all the other top brands. They also wore evenly with only a bit of squaring off. What's not to like!
Roadtec 01’s for me every time. Fantastic tyre for all round road conditions. Good wear pattern and lifespan too
The roadtec 01 on the front of my 1200s after 2500 miles was absolutely mullered. Look at the shape of the tyre. One of the worst tyres I’ve ever experienced. Ruined the handling, ruined a holiday in the alps. Swapped both to a Pr5,s simply wonderful in comparison. My new pikes peak came on the usual Scorpion 2 and will be on something more sporty before its first trip into the alps next year.
That’s not good at all , I did a scorpion front on a trip to Austria this year which ruined the trip a bit , it was like a three penny bit when I got back . S22’s also transformed the bike for me
Admittedly I’m a reasonably quick rider but that front was one of the worst ever. Initially the tyres were amazingly good, but 1000 in and they went off very rapidly. Not good heading quickly downhill into a hairpin bend.
Never tried the Roadtec's but my experience of the Road 5 sadly doesn't match yours, this was mine after 3k miles, still plenty of tread on the lh side though, the rear fared less well. Subsequently fitted a pair of Angel GT2's and I'm really pleased with them, grip level in both wet and dry conditions is impressive and, for my riding style, durability wise they are far superior to the Road 5, having now covered 4k miles under similar condition, they still have plenty of life left in them, so far so good .
Wasn't happy with the deep scalloping on the front Roadtec. In fairness the OEM tyres did the same & handled worse. Lets see how the Mitch fairs, then I'll be able to give comparable feedback.
My front roadtec looked the same as yours but after a few more miles than you got. Mine was mainly commuting in heavy traffic.
Avon 3DXM. Great grip wet or dry, great mileage, and great price. Earlier this year I left for a trip to Spain with almost 6000 miles already on the tyres. I then did a further 1800 miles consisting of endless twisty roads, including a couple of wet days, and even a bit of gravel track light off road. By the time I got home they were squared off a bit, but not that much, and were down to the wear bars, but were still performing ok, although by then they were ready for a change. I'm now 2000 miles into my second set, riding in the current wet, damp and cold roads and they continue to impress. Thoroughly recommended.
Your theory of front clearing for back would only work in a straight line. On bends the front has a bigger turning circle than the back so they don’t track each other
That’s absolutely correct, but it’s the high speed long sweeps where the rear with its slightly wider contact patch drives straight over the line that the front has cleared. You certainly don’t want the rear to ever let go but it’s more likely to at speed under load. So mixing tyre makes / models is an absolute no way for me.
My multi scalloped the front tyres until I changed the front suspension. 2 k out of 1st Scorpions before handling ruined, changed at 2.5 k. Someone was talking about 14k miles out of tyres. Never, ever in my life got more than 8 k from a front or over 6k from a rear. Least miles was 1200 from a rear on an S1. Roads, riders, suspension set up will all make huge differences.
