Rusty Tank - on the inside!

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Ian, Apr 15, 2013.

  1. Hi!
I've just picked up a little project for the evenings over summer. The engine is good apparently, but the wiring needs work, which doesn't frighten me too much, the front brake needs a attention (ditto!) and there's a few other niggling problems. However my concern is the petrol tank. It's rusted internally. Any ideas please?
    thanks!

    Ian.

  2. which bike Ian?

  3. It's an elderly Yamaha 100. Please don't judge me!!

  4. The good old gravel, old nuts etc in the tank and shake like mad cleans off all the rust off. Dont laugh, google it and it does work.

  5. Then you can re-seal it with POR-15 tank sealer. I used this on my old landrover, it works.

  6. I used POR15 to treat my SS tank. Admittedly it hadn't got too much rust but I would recommend using it once you've treated the rust.

  7. Ian I'm not sure which Yamaha 100 you have, but I have had the pleasure of riding Yamaha 100' s and 135's on many occasions In India, where I think the emission laws are different with the consequence of maximum power being extracted from the engine.
I think it's a superb engine, packs plenty of punch , virtually indestructible. Those in the know prefer the 100 to the 135!

I'm talking 2 stoke btw, is yours a 2 stroke? yamaha rx 100.jpg

Just remembered the model is an RX 100

  8. It's a Yamaha YB100. C reg, has had a engine rebuild, but the wiring and tank are my worries!

  9. Cement mixer, a couple of old duvets, pea gravel and a bit of water. oh and 20 mins.

Bit of imagination required but works.

  10. Ian

This is the bike I mentioned. I have thrashed the living daylights out of them for hours on end in temperatures of up to 38'c, off roading in the jungle, screaming them along the flat, they just never seem to go wrong. Wonderful bikes. Introduced in 1985 I believe, and still have respect from the connoisseurs. Yamaha Rx100-The banned beauty awaits to be reproduced - YouTube

Lets hope the YB100 is as good.

  11. I recall Phil ( Ghost on this site) removing the wheel on his Transit and strapping the tank to the brake drum, putting it in gear and getting the same action as the cement mixer. Ingenious!

  12. What Phil didn't tell you is that the first time he did it, he forgot to jack the other drive wheel off the ground........he was last seen heading for Mallory Park with what looked like a flat red tyre..........hence the home made ally tank.

    Allegedly.
