Dropping 748 Motor A Lil...

  1. afternoon my chums...
    As im sure everyone has heard by now, im having trouble with my swingarm pivot..
    ive now got as far as cutting it (got it 170mm out but that was it) and punching it back in so its now in the void of the engine cases..
    next step is lower the engine a bit, pivoting it on the front mounting bolt.. Anyone done this?
    ive got all panels, tank, airbox and whatnot off.
    looks like throttle bodies next. what else will i need to remove? i will find out as i get to bits but advice and a game plan is handy!!!

  3. In theory....shouldn’t it just drop out in tact, with electrics and pipes disconnected?
     
  4. will i need to remove hoses? im only lowering the rear a few inches.. was hoping there may be enough play..
    basically i want to remove as little as poss!!!
     
  5. Throttle bodies have to come of to remove the engine, I don't know how much movement you will have if you don't remove them, I'd remove them just for ease.

  7. I remember having to remove a swing arm pivot from a Paso.....friend gave me some magical spray the spindle just came out where hammering and cursing failed.

    And more importantly, why are you fucking with it in the 1st place???

  9. As Bradders said ^^^ IMO you'll have to drain the coolant and disconnect the hoses from the rad so there's room for the front of the engine to move upwards; might even have to remove the rad. Also the battery box (if not off already) and quite possibly, looking at mine, the thermostat and sensors incase they hit the frame member above as the engine swivels.

    ps. I'd leave the front sprocket in place - for now:D. I was well :mad: that that one on that 600SS just slid off in the other thread, it was at least as rusty as mine was.

  13. so, obviously all bodywork and air box off, throttle bodies off from the rubber manifolds (but just left sitting there) exhaust front and mid pipes off, left footrest hanger off (so as not to damage when cutting through shaft) lower rad bracket off, battery was all ready out but left box in place, crank case breather tank out (probably could have stayed and just disconnected hose at bottom but 30 sec job and will help when cleaning) my chain breaking tool is shot so slackened chain as much as poss, clutch slave removed which allowed just enough space to pull chain to side and rotate till it was off sprocket, sprocket removed (just because it was easy!!!) think that was it.
    trolley jack under engine, take a lil weight and then remove upper rear engine mounting bolt, then very slowly lower engine whilst making sure nothing got caught..
    had to push the rad a smidge but no problems there.. i got literally just enough movement to allow the remains of shaft to be pulled out before the thermostat housing hit the frame, if id have needed 2 mm more that would have had to have come off... oh and vertical belt cover had to come off but i dont know if thats because its a carbon job and maybe sticks out a few mm more than standard? that was all it needed to clear frame..
    so new shaft HEAVILY greased and inserted no prob, top bolt back in (that went in first) and jobs nearly a good un.. just got to put it all back together!! but want to do some cleaning first..
    all and all, no where near as painful as i thought it would be..

  15. cheers mate, will be fantastic to ride it! been 3 years!!!!
    still need to get the paint work redone.. and id love to get the white faces on the clocks and the disc centres done white... i'll just have to see on budget as need the track bike sorting desperately!! the scrambler may have to go...

  17. thanks mate! to some this stuff is a POP but im used to working with timber (nearly said wood!) and can be a lil more brutal, im not a natural grease monkey at all... very pleased with my afternoons efforts!!

  19. done the magic spray bit days before i attempted the jod and the pivot was new when i put it in a few years ago.. well greased it was too.. but in my efforts to do the right thing (remove and re-grease) i managed to flare the end by using the wrong kit and being a ham fisted tit... it wouldnt pass through the bushes/bearing...
