Looking at alternative sidestand options for my 998s as the standard bit of al dente spaghetti looks liable to total collapse at any time. If I take the bike to the TT its impossible to safely strap it down, so will a more substantial looking 999 one fit, or has anyone any suggestions?
Both Cyclecat and Slingshot racing make a more substantial replacement sidestand, The Slingshot is 1" longer and Cyclecat do shorter, longer and standard length versions; Slingshot Racing : Ducati CNC Billet Kickstand Side Stand - $149.99 and Cycle Cat DKS31 - Ducati Side Stand I've got the 1" longer Cyclecat as my bike would lean too far but apart from correcting the lean angle it is much stronger and has a less 'sharp' foot so is less prone to sinking into soft tarmac.
Perfect Nelson ,ta,, thats exactly whats needed,especially as it reduces the lean.Do I need the 1098 springs also or will the existing 998 ones do ? Hard to justify the price, postage and possible customs robbery on a Slingshot one Dukedesmo, lovely though it is.
Put a 1198 one on my 996, just needs a weld on the front of the stand to get the thing to sit a the right angle. Didn't like the 13 year old bit of alloy and prefer a 3 year old one which is longer and has a bigger foot...
You shouldn't tie the bike down while it's on the side stand. That's what makes 'em lean over afterwards, due to the extra pressure put on it. Hold the bike upright and tie down with straps either side, that will hold the bike firmly down. Or you could do this in conjunction with a paddock stand.
I think they are interchangeable. I bought the whole assemble and bolted it straight on, though mine is a 1098 engine. But others have done the same with the 748-996 lump. Why not try; DUCATI 1098S SIDE STAND SCUFFS @LOOK@ 848 1098 | eBay Cheap as..

Having owned bikes for over 30 years and travelled many times on ferries I know an iffy sidestand when I see one,especially as the bike is raised at the back and loaded with gear, the extra lean could be the straw that broke the camels back. Its a risk I am simply not prepared to take.
I will be there all right, whether on an immaculate 998S with modified sidestand :biggrin: or on my banana coloured GS I havent yet decided.:smile:
An mot tester broke my 748 sidestand leaning it over to raise the front wheel testing the head bearings. He replaced it. Personally I dont like the ally stands and have little faith in them, but thats just me.
I bought a complete secondhand Streetfighter side stand assembly for my 998S which bolted straight on and stands the bike upright at a much healthier angle. Sorted for £50 ;o))) Fugly
