It depends on what you do in the oil industry, as any industry. Economically the oil industry is making handsome profits but the UK government is not getting it's 'fair' share due to policy. I have had my share of light workload and reduced income during the last downturn, but as it starts from a high it is only relative. As any industry the 'good old days' never actually come back but everyone adapts. We went through a similar phase in late 80's early 90's but then everyone got the rose tinted glasses on in the noughties and cant see back beyond then. For instance the oil price was historically considered to be good at $40/bbl but in the early to mid nineties it was more like $20/bbl - the industry survived. in the late noughties oil was around $100 - $120/bbl and everyone made hay (but forgot to put it in the barn) now the oil price is $60/bbl and we're all fekked? There is less money sloshing around and talk of eco-energy will scare plenty of people but I would say the oil industry is far from fekked. Your friends have their own circumstances, I have seen less people travelling from the NE England over the past few years as it no longer makes financial sense for them - same for people travelling from NE Scotland to London. The oil industry is different to what it has been at certain times but 'fucked' it is not - it would be easy to say the same of the motor industry but it is still a stable employer
