I've got a bit of a dilemma. I am booked in to do the bikesafe event at Castle Combe tomorrow which clashes with the Italia show. But I've just read in the t&c's that there is a strict 105db noise limit. My 999 has a termi half system and I must admit is a bit fruity. If I can't do the track bit, I'm thinking that I'll just sack it and join everyone in the mass ride in from gordano services in the morning. Am I likely to be told that my bikes too loud and not be able to play on the circuit? Need to make my mind up tonight. Fanx in advance Deaks
If I recall castle doom only allow bikes with road silencers. If they see a not for road use stamp you don't get on. Have you got any baffles? the limit is what puts me off going.
I think someone in our group got pulled out last year but mates 1100 monster with termis passed - they are strict Then they let people go round in textiles Go figure
One of the regular instructors there rides a 1098 with termi's. I did a Focused Events track day there last year which was 105 and there were a few Dukes with Termi's then. I've got a RC8R with full Akra and I'm doing it.
I did it a couple of years back on my 999 with standard cans and had no trouble. I dont recall anyone checking non standard exhausts so i reckon you should be ok. Bloody better be as im going tomorrow on the 848 with 'not for road use' Termis and baffles in! I will be there from 10 onwards. 08 848 in white reg ending BUO!! I will be the one being shown the door for a loud exhaust!!!
Thanks guys, I think I will chance it, after all I've already paid. After I'll drop down into Bristol and check out the show. Looking forward to a day of bike stuff. I'll be the bloke in black Berik leathers and a Shark union jack helmet riding a 999 with red wheels. Cheers Deaks
105 is a good limit . Not many will fail that . my 999R with full termi hit 104 last time in Germany , but , there is a trick to noise testing . Clutch needs to be just pulled . Try it on tick over and you will see how much it will quieten it. By the way it failed at the nerburg at 104.5 had to go out and come back in. did it with the clutch trick and O.K. . Checked every lap if they can be bothered seen loads refused.
I agree with ducati2242. 105dB is a good limit and you'd be unlucky to fail with what you have. You can always get a free noise test app for your phone. I think measurments are taken at 30 degrees and half a meter away from the can.
To the left looking at the rear. A lot of testers dont know that and most take offence at been told how to do there job .
That test only applies if the circuit tests to ACU regs. And it's 0.5m at 45 degrees at 5000 rpm. Castle coombe doesn't test to this standard. Taken from castle coombe website: requirements- Bike track days are open to all riders with a full licence and machines of 250cc and over. Bikes must be fitted with their original factory fitted silencer. We try to discourage competition machines, due to the strict sound regulations in place for the track days. Riders need to have a full face helmet, and either one or two piece leathers. If they are two piece, then these must zip together either fully or partially. Boots and gloves must be of leather construction and carry no metal studs. It is strongly recommended that additional back protectors be worn whilst on the circuit. Noise limits- The noise limit for the day is 105 db(A), which is measured at ½ metre from the exhaust outlet at ¾ maximum revs. It is the rider’s responsibility to ensure that their machine is within this limit. All machines are sound tested prior to going out on the circuit. In the event of a machine failing the sound check, then the rider will be entitled to a 75% refund. If you are unsure if your bike will get through the noise test (i.e. if it is fitted with an after market exhaust system), then you can always come over to get the bike noise tested prior to booking a place.
My 999 had a half system, at cadwell its anywhere between 100 and 102 but at Oulton it just scrapes through, last time it was 104.5. I think you will be ok
Well mine failed the noise test at Castle Combe today, after wandering aimlessly round my bike eventually found the lunderslung exhaust the noise nazi checked my rev counter and told me to rev it to 8,250 WTF, he then smiled nicely and showed me the DB meter reading of 111, I'll get my coat then. He also turned away an oldish Triumph springy thing itch a standard can, so I wasn't the only one. Hope everyone else got through OK.
To the left looking at the rear. A lot of testers dont know that and most take offence at been told how to do there job . Its 4500 rpm so theres another that dont know what hes doing. I wouldnt hold mine with no load at that high a rpm . Its alright revving it and letting it off but I have heard a lot of horror stories of sustained revs with no load.
Totally agree here , 8.5k with no load is no good. 4500 is the recognised rpm. what do they do with old cars that dont rev to 4500? do they just let them go, dont think so. so ho do you test a 1920's aircraft engined car? or even a bike that revs to 20k??? Your comments please.
guys I don't know what you're moaning at. It clearly states on they're website what their testing procedure is. So 8000ish rpm is inline with that procedure. as said though thats no good for the motor with no load on it. And 4500 rpm is wrong. ACU testing for a 2 cylinder four stroke over 750cc is 5000rpm, 0.5 m away at 45 degrees. The only circuits I know of that test using these guidelines are MSV circuits. As far as i know castle isn't an MSV track so they can do what they want. The council could even have an input. Silverstone, for example is a 102db limit imposed by the council.
Castel doom DONT DO AN ACU APPROVED noise test. IT is documented on this site and many others and is including in their sign on instructions.
I think you get 75% of your money back if you fail to get out at Castle Comb which is pretty good. Some places give you sod all. 8500rpm is way too high i don't know what they're doing. I do kinda cheat though. I've got a digital dash with no defined scale, i just put tape where i want them to thing half and full scale is. I've even done the old, stick one or both baffles in, pass the test, then take them out. You've gotta have some pretty knackered silencers to be so loud you'd get black flagged.
