You realise than a average salary means lots are under that, right? Did you wander into a 50k pa job as a early 20 yr old? Or have some money invested to start your business? Or have you always been on 20k pa and been lucky enough to work within walking distance? doesn’t take Einstein to work out, if you earn 24k pa and your rent and bills are 12k, getting to work is a couple grand there isn’t a lot left

Left school at 14 , double jobbed at 18 set up my company at 19 ,its 25 years going this year but while I saved to buy my first house I lived like a pauper that's what saving is ,the new generation of city living latte drinking holiday going on snowflakes don't seem to understand what sacrifice is they want everything but want to finance it , and then piss and moan that there job doesn't pay enough !
But I’m with you skitz on the complaining when there is a new car every two years and the missus and bloke spend hundreds having things waxed and polished every month.
Absolutely pal !!! That's what life is and its the pressure from debt that can eventually make you sick !! I'm not against finance just the overdose of it !!
I feel the same way , but the problem goes deeper than that , IMO . The purpose of schools was once to educate kids with a broad package of knowledge in order to prepare them for life in the real world . Now the purpose is simply to process them to " get certificates" , because the more they get , the higher the school is rated ( along with it's staff ) . And the same dumbing-down extends to many universities ( now that there are twice as many of them ) . They've been called " scout hut " universities , or The Univerity of Bums on Seats , and they are now run as businesses , and the profit motive is high on their agenda . One of them was little more than a front for an immigration racket . They would grant places to foreign students , arrange study visas , then never see them again ! Students pay nine grand a year in fees , to be given study material via internet , and course work submitted and marked the same way , with very little useful time spent with lecturers in person . Sausage factories producing " media studies " graduates by the thousand ..... just what the world needs That is not really an education system , is it .
People over the age of 18 are capable of and entitled to make their own minds up. They don't always get it right, and they have to take responsibility for their mistakes. Goes back to the "learning" mentioned earlier.
Agreed bradders I love to see people have nice things !! I think it becomes an addiction to some folks !! Had a mate really in a dark place when our recession hit and all he had was credit card debt to sit with him and see how he racked up 34k on a card was sobering !!
Well said. I’ve just read as a result of austerity the council is set to raise the council tax above that of inflation yet again! Austerity! If the cities of Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, and Sheffield ever get together to form a Northern Powerhouse in the future, the term North/South Divide would take on a very different meaning. I think it’s about time the capital had some fair competition.
In 2000 there were approximately 1.2 million students attending University in the UK. Its close to 1.9 million now.
Unfortunately each city within what you describe as a ‘Northern Powerhouse’ are in competition with each other all chase the same pot of money. I sure the West Midlands conurbation would also like whatever monies are being handed out by central government. Market forces however will always prevail just because you throw government grants at regions it won’t always bring gain.
That’s where we need to pull together, and share the wealth. Have you ever traveled from Manchester to Leeds on a Monday morning. We need better investment and autocracy

TransPennine, i’ll assume thats the line your referencing? Not on a Monday on a Sunday yes (destination Halifax) it wasn’t that quick the rail stock seemed antiquated and it was pretty full. Nice views but only from the 1 side of the train the other seemed to consist of rock lots of vertical rock.
Are there any deep mines still left open or are you referencing open cast? The last deep mine was closed in the West Midlands about 2 years ago, not economically viable. Most of the pits where I live closed long ago not so long after the Miners strike. The pit heads are either industrial sites or housing developments. I’m not so sure about the nicest natured.....having been climbing in some remote parts and refused service in a pub and invited to **** off because you’re English seems to jar with your description.
