1098 Battery Charge Issue

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Flatty, Jan 3, 2020.

  1. I recently had a battery fitted at ducati dealer locally. I had one of those trickle charge adapter things on prior to this, but damaged the battery by leaving the light on when I went away for a month
Anyhow I've kept the new battery on trickle charge, but this week it was flat. I thought the charger must be at fault, so I bought a more expensive one, and I've connected it to the charging port, and it's giving me an error message which, according to the manual, suggests that the polarity is the wrong way round
    It was definitely OK before
Is it possible that it's been refitted when the battery was changed, but the wrong way round??
Or am I being stupid as usual?

  2. I suggest you check the wires to the battery for the fly lead to make sure they are correctly installed.

Also, have you considered changing your name to something like “fullychargey”?

  3. No criticism here but if you had a dealer fit the battery can I take it you are not confident in working on your bike?
If so I would take your charger and bike to the dealer and get them to sort it. It does sound like the old fly lead is not compatible with your new charger
Is the fly lead something connected to the battery and tucked behind the fairing. I have heard of people connecting to the DDA lead under the sear thinking it's a charge point

  4. It's defo a charging point It was connected and working when I bought the bike. Its only not working since the battery was changed.
The bike and I are both better off if I don't try and fix it myself.

  5. You gotta be careful.
I have a Ring battery charger and for reasons beyond me, they had swapped the polarity of their charge leads around from an older model to the new model. Same connector, just different polarity
I bought the new model - but I had kept the old lead on the bike. I spotted the potential disaster and switched things around, but crap like that does happen.

  6. STEP AWAY FROM THE MACHINE....
And take it to a dealer or a motor electrician.

  7. Well, that's what it was. Cables connected the wrong way round. I'm expecting a decent bill from the mechanic

  15. You stated you thought the charger might be the problem, which then you replaced. I'd assume you may have a badly wired garage which the devices I've suggested would diagnose.

You prove clearly that some people shouldn't take on simple jobs which could result in the entire vehicles electrics needing to be replaced. Costing you a pretty penny' ..I wrongly assumed it would be more technical.
