If the stand breaks the motorcycle may unexpectedly fall over, increasing the risk of injury. CR184 – Side Stand Replacement Multistrada 1260 MY 2018 (All versions, Enduro Model Excluded) Safety Recall Campaign SRV-RCL-19-004 1/11 Date: November 18, 2019 To: Dealer Principal, General Manager, Service Manager, North American Dealer Network From: Richard Kenton, Technical Director Eric Bradley, Technical Training and Publications Manager Dear Dealers, Due to a defect in the manufacturing process of the supplier of the side stand, it is necessary to replace the side stand on a small production run of these specific motorcycles. The side stand could potentially fail at the weld that joins the tube of the stand itself with the forged upper joint, causing a possible fall of the motorcycle, and may result in damage or injury. On certain motorcycles, the side stand may not have been manufactured correctly. An improper weld that joins the tube to the forged part on the top of the stand, could affect the reliability of the component. Description of the Safety Risk : Due to a improper weld, the side stand may be compromised and separate at the weld. If the defect occurs, the side stand could break at the weld that joins the tube to the forged part on the top. The bike could fall down increasing the risk of injury. Description of the Cause : The cause for this is that the length of the tube may have been cut out of tolerance causing an improper weld at the joint.
My DUCATI distributor in Guadalajara, México, replaces, for the second time, the sidestand with the fault indicated in the recall. The first was due to a guarantee claim from my part. The strange thing about it is that they are replacing the same part number. This does not seem to be a good solution. I would expect the replacement to be with a different sidestand, manufactured with better quality. In summary, my Multistrada 2018 1260s is already using its THIRD side stand. If it is already known that the part number is not of adequate quality, why replace it with the same? As a DUCATI client I expected a more radical solution. To equal actions, equal results.
If it is a welding issue and the welding has been addressed with subsequent parts then it is good to go, in spite of it having the same part number?
It was raised by a faulty batch of stands, not a design issue. No change in part number needed. Not all bikes are affected, only the ones fitted with the faulty batch.
It's quite possible to do this if you have really good inventory control, especially at your parts warehouses. I've done it at my last employer a few times. It can be faster and easier than releasing a new part number in the system and the customer can get a good part. I'm not saying this happened in your case but is possible.
