I'm just in the process of prepping my bike for the Spring heatwave(!!) and I've just noticed that the oil cooler has fractured across one of the mounting lugs. BUGGER!!! Firstly, does anyone have a spare oil cooler that they would be willing to part with for some beer tokens? (PM me if you can help with that). Not too bothered which type as I've got both types of tappet cover. Secondly, can anyone recommend a good ally welder (preferably in the Dorset area) so I can get my old one repaired? Many thanks in advance. WW
Not sure really, I'm trying to remember what a 916 oil cooler looks like. Is it triangular and sits in the belly pan or is that the radiator? I do need to increase the cooling capacity a bit because the engine runs v hot with the HC pistons and big bore etc.
Before you bin the old one.... Mine did just the same thing. So I cut the old brackets off, and used a spare bit of inch strip steel to make a U shaped bracket. Some Mini exhaust hanger cotton reel type rubber mounts were fitted to the rocker cover after a little drilling and tapping, then the U shaped steel bracket went onto the oil cooler after drilling a couple of shallow M6 holes into the top of the oil cooler then tapping them. Total cost less than a fiver, and now the cooler is mounted a lot more securely than it ever was. Result.
So, quick update. I've now got a 916 cooler, thanks to Nelson, which fits onto the upper rocker cover bracket and I have my original cooler which mounts onto the lower rocker cover bracket but what I need are fittings and pipelines to joint them all up and, because of the non-standard set up I will need them to be bespoke. In a previous life I spent a couple of years working in the hydraulic bay of HMS Osprey (RNAS Portland) so I'm very comfortable making up my own flexible pipelines but I need to know what size the fittings are and where I can source hydraulic pipelines and compression fittings from. Can anyone of you knowledgeable people help me out? MTIA, WW
WW, there are plenty of specialists out there who supply industrial hydraulic hose and fittings, I was plumbing up the fuel system in my TR6 a few years ago, and wanted to change all the manky 35 year old fuel pipe, and plumb in a new modern fuel pump. I found that in the next town there was a company who could do this, so I just took along my old pipework, and told them to replicate it in braided stainless hose, with the appropriate fittings. I can't remember how much they charged me, but it seemed rather reasonable at the time. Have a look at Fluid Power, or Hydraulics supplies companies near you, I bet that you can find something.
Incidentally, I've been thinking about going down the double oil cooler route. anyone know which of the two tappings on the engine is the feed, and return?
The top one is the pressure line and the bottom one is the return. It shouldn't really matter which way round you plumb it in though. WW
As long as it's not Seasick Steve! If you need anything or assistance just shout mate. I'm hoping to put a few miles on the 900ss this summer once I've sorted out the oil cooler and want to get the Darmah ss back on the road too. Must meet up sometime over the summer mate. I reckon I need to do another BBQ  WW
I'll get the old one repaired Chewy. Shouldn't be too difficult. Just need to find out the fitting size so I can get the new oil lines made up. Thanks for the offer though mate. WW
Try threadandpipe.com Thread and Pipe Unit 26 Elliot Road West Howe Industrial Estate Bournemouth BH11 8JZ they might even do it while you wait
Just give earls performance a call at silverstone. They're superb, know ducati's and are right next door to Baines Racing
This is my fix for broken oil cooler mounting brackets. Doh! Can't get a pic to post from my phone. Will have to wait till later. Pesky Blackberries!
