My 1098S is due for a belt change this summer. I'll soon call a couple of dealers to see how much they'll quote me but I was wondering if anyone could advise what would be a sensible figure? I'll most likely provide the belts so it's just the cost of labour (belts replacement only not the full service - I do the easy stuff myself. Thanks
Yep. My local Ducati delaer has an offer on servicing during the winter when the workshop is quieter. If you are looking to save a few £££, you can always take the fairings off yourself before handing the bike over, it's not a 5 min job to remove them. I didn't, so i may have been able to get the price down a bit more.
Do it yourself, much simpler than I expected. Cost me £70 for the belts and £40 for the oil & filter ( Shell oil and genuine Ducati parts )
Yeah, I used to do them myself on a 916 I had a few years ago, it's quite easy actually. I wanted the dealer's stamp in the book though on the 1098s.
I do all my own work/servicing. I keep receipts and document everything no different really from a dealer stamp.
So muhc will depend on where you are in the country. If you live near London you will get shafted for labour costs.
Just had my 1098s done by Motorapido. The full service came out to £680. That was with the discount from owners club. Not sure what to say about much cheaper prices quoted here. Have always had all my work done at Motorapido so keen to stay with them but £340 hurts a bit. Regards Steve
I just paid Motorapido £136 for just the belts , that's not fitted btw, just for a set of belts for a 749s! ffs
Its still a service either way. BTW I am talking out of warranty bikes. However on saying that Ducati did replace my cracked rear subframe last year FOC
Jesus, £136 for the belts !!!, Mine were meant to be about £95 but I get discount (Good customer ! ) This is from a Ducati main dealer as well. Motorapido appear to be funding their racing by charging extra for their parts. Shouldn't say that really as they are great, used them lots and Craig in parts has always offered excellent service.
That's bout right for 'stretta belts. For some reason, they'll quite a bit more than most. £340 is about right for a belt service. The higher costs appear to be pulling a Desmo (7500 mile) service in as well on top.
Well on the 1098s, my logic is that I could probably buy the parts and do the work myself for £150, the dealer charged me a few hours labour and it cost me just under £200 more. I could keep the receipts and explain this to somebody if I decided to sell the bike, or have a dealer receipt and a stamp in the book with a comprehensive service history. In my eyes, I'd be knocking more than £200 off the value of the bike by not having the history. It's a 1098s, as mint as you'll ever see with 2000 miles from new, I'd be asking questions as a buyer if it hadn't been looked after by a main dealer. View attachment 14512
Thanks for all the replies guys. The service will most likely be done by St Neots motorcycles. I've fitted Dzus fasteners so removing all fairings takes only few minutes I was thinking about doing it myself... It doesn't look too complex but I'm a bit worried about the consequences of doing this wrong:/
What's the difference between a dealer doing the work and a good home mechanic doing work on his own bike that he loves, uses a forum and the Internet for tips, ideas to complete the work. The dealer could be very good but so could the owner. Personally I would rather buy a bike from someone who has done all the work themselves and knows bike inside out than a dealer who is just going to stamp the book. When doing work on my bikes I've kept receipts of parts I've changed and even taken photos of old and new so future buyers can see I've done a good job. I'm not against dealers at all they have saved my bacon many a times but if I can do the job myself and save some money, even have some fun doing the work then I'm feeling better in my self rather than hand over a large wedge of cash to some bloke....just my thoughts.
I agree and disagrre with the points made actually. I have no idea who the mechanic is in the main dealer who would be working on my bike. Does he cut corners when the boss isn't looking etc? I do however know that he has been trained on how to work on my bike and works on them on an almost daily basis.I know the owner of my dealership and spend a lot of money with him, if I'm unhappy, he's unhappy. I'm sure as you say, you are a competent mechanic. But I don't know that. You may see no difference between a micrometer and a mallet ! If I turn up to buy a bike that someone says they have loved but find a service book with a load of blank pages in, it smacks of scripming on the pennies. What else has been scrimped on?' I've heard bikes described as mint before and turned up to find something that wouldn't look out of place in Steptoe's yard. On a bike in this condition, milage and age, it pays me to keep a comprehensive history. However, I service my MV Agusta F4 myself. Take my time, take photographs and keep receipts. It's now 13 years old and I don't think that it would make any difference to the value or desirability of the bike whether the dealer stamps the service record or if I have a record of the work done. It's more about the condition of the machine now. So I get what you are saying, but it's not black and white.
