Replacing Fuel Filler Surround Gasket

  1. My fuel filler cap and surround sits far too high on the tank. After removing and undoing all the little screws I tried to get it to sit down but it just wouldn't budge. I ended up removing the black rubber gasket and hey presto down it goes and fits a treat. Decided to buy another gasket, exactly the same thing and why is it so small, it looks to be about 10mm smaller diameter, thought the gasket forms a seal between the petrol cap surround and the tank, its way too small for that................The dealer assures me its the correct part.

Is it the end of the world not having the black gasket ( still have the green rubber ring ) ? and anybody had the same experience.

  2. They are notoriously difficult to fit so I suspect it is the right part, I usually fit the gasket around the filler first, it will sit there once you've stretched it around, plenty of Vaseline on the green rubber ring, get it centre over the whole and push, the Vaseline is essential, oil won't work. Good luck :upyeah:

  3. yep this is one of those "Ducati" things that will have you doubting your own sanity, as previously suggested, lube the green one and try dropping the black one in some hot water for a bit, then fit it flush with the alloy lip, this is where you need a 3rd hand (forceps?) as you tease round it feels like failure but persevere and it will go and stay put, once on it will still need a good shove into the tank opening and keep the downward pressure on it whilst nipping up the grub screws. Patience is your friend on this one.

  4. And if I don't bother ?

  5. well, er, I guess the best case it'll just look wrong, worse case it could leak, put it down have a think / break and go back to it, it's simply mastering the best technique, the first time I tried this I thought my (limited) skills were done for but you will prevail, best of luck with it. nils desperandum an'all that.

  6. l use fuel proof sealant/adhesive in a mastic gun instead (all the grub screws u/s),still use the geen o ring tho'

  7. I lubed the green o ring with rubber grease pushed the unit in leaving a small gap at the top , lubed the black sealing ring with rubber grease streched it over the cap from the top and it falls corrcetly into place , no real drama just a bit of fiddling.
