Hi all First post hope its in right place. OK i had these issues a few weeks ago and my local ducati said they could not replicate the issues when i took it to them and said it was maybe bad fuel! The issues are throttle related either i get no throttle IE i open throttle and get nothing. or it seems to be over revving i get to high a revs for the throttle input im giving it, the other issue is when i approach a junction or a round about, traffic lights i go down into first to stop and the bike cuts out and i have to restart and when i do restart it sounds terrible. Example tonight im traveling on a dual carriageway im on inside lane and need the outside so i signal and go to pull out into lane i open throttle and nothing ! i open throttle wide open and nothing! so i pull back into inner lane and roll off throttle and bike slows very violently felt like worse engine braking ever, i came up off seat it was so bad. the common factor is when i had this a few weeks ago the bike had got very wet over a few days and remained wet and got wet during the occurrence of the issues. But when ducati had it it was in the shop in the dry for 36 hours before they took it out to test it and had none of the issues for 50miles and told me it was properly bad fuel so i had it back. Its been cold but dry since and bike has been fine, and only got wet yesterday and again this morning then tonight on way in as in example above the issue returns ! so my question is how can it getting wet cause me these issues opinions and help needed! i will be of course taking back to ducati asap Thanks
Is the bike still under warranty? If so I'd just take it back o the dealer, explain the symptoms and get them to investigate. if not I'd take off the fairings and cast a good eye over the electrics looking for any sign of water ingress. Also check the battery terminals for security. Can't think of anything else at the moment matt
yes luckily it is still under warranty even tho its a late 2010 the two year warranty was never activated until i bought it in sept 2011 as a ex demo from ducati so still have until Sept this year of warranty! when i took it in a few weeks ago it cost 113 quid(covered by warranty) and all they did was drain fuel and change fuel filter! they didnt even take panels off and investigate because they couldn't replicate issue i was not happy about this but needed bike back so accepted it. Just don't get what can be causing the issue and if it is indeed because of rain.
Unless you have a short somewhere its unlikley I'd have thoughton such a new bike. Google 'cutting out' or similar, I'm sure 848s have had issues in the past, which was either fuelling or ecu related, can't remember
They need to get both coil sticks out and thoroughly blast the sparkplug recesses with an air hose. A liberal spray of water dispersant is then needed. I got caught out in a monsoon on my 999 and it was like riding a bronco the revs were so erratic. I ended up being recovered by the RAC to the guy who services my bike. He did the above and all was well.
The cutting out at the lights/ idle was associated with the tps, normally during the first 600 miles. A reset at the first service usually cured this. i see you're in Bristol. Dealer not riders by any chance?
If you're based in Bristol maybe try JHS? I've never tried them but I heard a lot of good things about them.
Cant really help you re advice about the bike, some good suggestions above though. But one thing i would do, go to a different ducati dealer as suggested. Be interested to see what the outcome is.
Thanks all for advice, as its under warranty still im going to take it to riders its booked in and a courtesy bike has been arranged. i will update with what they find out! hopefully this time they just strip it down and have a good look at everything.
ok bit of an update riders have replaced coil's and an oxygen sensor under warranty, However I had a brake issue the day of taken it too riders the front brake stayed on after a hard brake, I stopped had a quick look nothing looked obvious carried on the last mile to riders with the brake slightly rubbing on the front left disc. Riders have told me both calipers are very corroded and need striping completely and cleaning they have said it will cost about 340 quid! the bike has done 7k and was serviced (2year) just before xmas, what do you all think? seems a bit odd on such a new bike not to mention cost!
Get it back and do the brakes yourself. Easily a diy job if u a re a bit technically savvy. They wanted to charge me £120 to change the fork oil at my last service. Fork off was my reply ! £15 worth of oil and 1 hour of my time later, job done.
As above... 'nuff sados on here that will walk you through it  Does it still have the stock levers?
If the bike is used through winter, the salt will cause the pads to stop moving freely. Its an issue with all bikes and the salt they use on the roads these days.
apparently on one side of one caliper the pistons are stuck because of corrosion and need removing as well as the others on both calipers for a clean! not sure I could do myself getting calipers off and changing pads and general cleaning im ok at. but removing pistons im not sure about
Give Rich at Louig Moto a call. He'll sort you out and not man rape you in the process! Louigi Moto // Ducati Specialists Tell him Gary from Swindon sent you his way...
Update ducati fitted new callipers under warranty but stated they would not do again as it was down to corrosion from bad weather !! and that i should take better care of it ! not in those words but that was impression they gave me, to say i was pied off was an understatement! bikes garaged and covered when not garaged yes i ride it in most weathers but i also deep clean it once a week and dry it off after rides if its got wet, they also they changed the coils and a oxygen sensor. I have also put a formal complaint into ducati due to the corrosion im getting on the engine casing by the clutch cylinder and the front suspension mounts for the brake callipers as well as generally on bolts and things around the bike! since i picked it up its been ok no more cutting out or throttle issues. However then this last few days i have been out on rides and got caught in some heavy rain and the bike pretty much straight away started playing up feeling choked up no power popping from exhaust hesitation when accelerating really truely terrible, so get home pissed off and dry bike down brakes discs etc then put into garage, then i get bike out today to go to work and bike barely starts wont tick over just keeps cutting out so i have to hold throttle at 1400rpm so its warmed up and get on and ride and its sounding awful and gloggy misfiring no power hesitates when i accelerate all the issues previously after 10 miles or so it gets better get to work very very pissed off now as i have a bike it seems that can't be used in bad weather at all not at all what i want, ducati have had it 3 times for these issues and have not fixed them as a bit of rain and they return, at this point i could happily hand the bike back get my cash and forget about ducati's forever and i intend to make this point to them very strongly tomorrow. at this point the evo has giving me more issues than the 748 1999reg i had before which puts a dent in the claim that new ducati's are more reliable than the older ones really! I just dont know what to do i can't afford these issues especially when the warranty is out in september i bought the evo so i didnt need to worry about issues like this its got its 7500 service wednesday so they will get a good chance to look at it again! but i have no faith in the bike no longer and thats the sad truth of it!
