Monster 1200r Fuel Line Union

Discussion in 'Monster' started by RFOZ, Feb 22, 2020.

  1. So today I thought I'd get the tank off and give it a good clean under there.

I came across the fuel line union that connects to the fuel pump. What an absolute piece of junk. I could only get one of the two sides to actually clip back onto the pump. As I pushed harder the first side would just pop off as the second clipped on and visa versa.

Is this part universal across all Ducatis? I've done a bit of a search and can see I'm not the only one who has had issues with Ducati unions.

Has anyone changed this and if so to what?

    Thanks in advance

  2. I have a spare line that i bought but don't need. I can check the part number - are you in UK?

  3. I think the part number is 59024051A £66.94 (Complete pipe set) & yes based in Cambs.

I'd like to understand why mine is faulty. Seems a poor design.

Do they just have one O-ring on the connector itself or is there a second O-ring inside the fuel pump tit?
Can you recommend a lubricant to put on the O-ring before assembly (that won't react with the fuel).

    Thanks

  4. I would use red rubber grease as it does not affect the rubber seals in brakes. I would not worry about it affecting the fuel as any grease will be diluted in many any gallons of petrol passing.

But The part number label on mine (1200s) is 590.2.400.1C so its different - see picture attached.

  5. By the way I agree that the snap on union to the tank feels flimsy and insecure. Mine wont click cleanly into place.

I have a spare pipe because i took the tank off looking for the switched power socket. When I put the fuel pipe back it started leaking. I checked it and it was not clicking into place like on other bikes.

So i thought it was faulty and bought a new one. However the replacement is a large job - much more work than a Superduke!! So I tried removing and pressing the pipe into the union gently and centrally and it became secure.

It has not leaked in 6000 miles. So that may work for you.

  6. Thanks for the reply. Maybe I'll take it all off again and put a very small amount of rubber grease on the o-ring and have another go. I'd rather just ditch that union and replace it with a well engineered aftermarket alternative.

  7. Having the exact same problem. Mine popped off twice last year on the way back from the Festival of Speed, both times in the fast lane of the motorway. Lucky escape. Managed to wedge a microfibre of all things to keep it in place to get me home, which worked but was sketchy.
Bought a new one which was a pig to fit and the remainder of last year the bike ran faultless.
Today as the weather was finally nice, got the bike out, fired it up and while I’m putting my helmet on, fuel starts gushing out again. Luckily the bike wasn’t fully warm, so inferno avoided.
Let it cool down and looked at it, looks flushly mounted. Take it off, reseat and no matter what, ignition on, fuel pump primed and dripping fuel. Quite simply the worst design I’ve come across on all the bikes I’ve ever had.
An alternative, better designed solution must be out there. If anyone knows I’d much appreciate it. Just don’t trust the bike anymore.
