  2. I have been working on Power Train on several PHEV and BEV vehicles for a while now and I also have not met an industry engineer who thinks it is the future either. Your attitude is very similar to what you portrayed regarding Brexit - if you don't get your own way you go all silly. I have worked on advanced cooling battery cell structures regarding design feasibility of said structures.

    My advice to the OP would be to wait and don't listen to owners who will sing the praises of electric vehicles to justify their own purchases. My advice to you is stop being so fekkin' nasty - there is a lot of knowledge on this forum from all walks of life and everyone doesn't have to accept yours.

  4. You can pretty much guarantee that the govt will be the people who know and understand the least about the use and future of electric vehicles. A year 10 science class would be a better place to get advice from.

  5. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Where is the energy coming from to replace the ICE? It's a gargantuan task.... It needs more thought and shit loads more infrastructure (like 20 nuclear power stations for a kick off).

    So yeah- fuck off Tesla with you're shitty quiet cars! Roll on the supercharged V8!!

  6. If you're doing it for the bik tax relief then buy an electric car, why wouldn't you if the range gets you covered and you're happy with how it drives or looks. At company car level they make reasonable sense if it fits the bill as you've only got a short while with it anyway and the tax from April 2020 is zero, then 2021 its still as low as you'll get.

    Here's some examples, the first being the BMW 530e M Sport (without any options added). It's fairly expensive for a company car I admit but it also currently falls into one of the lowest Co2 emissions brackets for a plug in hybrid, 2nd or 3rd best I believe, but the 2020 model drops to 8% bracket FYI

    I fully understand why people have concerns about the longevity of the tech though, I mean you can find a 50 year old petrol car in a barn, dust it off, clean up the engine and you'll get it sparked into life. But something that relies on battery cells in their current guise will be dead.

    There's no particular right or wrong in this, ultimately if a few more people whether company car owners or not switch to battery then the pollution will arguably drop in the UK, that's probably the only reason there's a tax break on them from the gov due to the targets they've set.
    Do we have the power station capacity to deal with everyone switching, probably not, and would the pollution simply come from elsewhere such as the building of new power stations, probably. What about the landfill required to scrap depleted power packs further down the line which no-one is talking about?

    I'm sure that they'll be better tech coming especially now that the Germans have woken up to the demise of the combustion engine in its more classic form, but what that'll be is anyone's guess
     
  7. It is the balance of evidence and not just hype that the industry and early adopters are acting on. They are not stupid. Believe me, the manufacturers and the anoraks that have been buying these vehicles do a LOT of their own research. I’ve met them and spoken to them. As a group they are generally highly informed about the ins-and-outs of all alternative fuels, and devote a lot of time to learning about them from genuinely authoritative sources.

    Clearly industry and these early adopter buyers have come to the conclusion that electric IS where it is at for the foreseeable future so it IS worth investing in. Hydrogen looks to have a longer term future but probably not for another 10 years or more. I don’t own a modern car myself, but if I was in the market for one right now I’d definitely be buying electric. In the end people will make up their own minds. It seems clear to me that we will all own at least one electric vehicle before we get into hydrogen or some other alternative ... even those who only buy cheap second-hand motors will end up in an electric at some point.

    Please do keep us abreast of your own future purchasing decisions. I’d be interested to know if and when you admit defeat and succumb ;-)
     
  8. It's little more than the gas experts such as corgi then gas safe.

    The car market is dead flat, industry needs a new in. Electric will be like diesel was, a short term one trick pony then in about 30-40 years someone will realise electric market has gone flat, so will notice just how much environmental damage the building and decomissioning of these cars will have and it will be onto the next "saviour of our planet" in terms of vehicles.

  10. I have a customer who drives alot in Germany. Apparently the fast chargers in the service station on the bigger roads have shot up in price so much it's actually cheaper to run a small petrol compared to a full electric.
    Just like when the government got everyone to drive diesels, the price of diesel shot up. The same thing will happen to electric

  11. Absolutely no doubt about that. Can you imagine the revenue currently generated by petrol/diesel?? Charge points will be metered and we'll be taxed accordingly. A shake hand chip system type deal, easily done. And done it will be ;)

  14. The range is the problem right now. At the moment Tesla and co are playing the all seducing one trick pony- 0-60 in not many seconds... Which is all fine and dandy. But if you cane the shite out of one, your range can drop to as little as 60 miles on a full charge. So a couple of donuts in Asda car park and you're gonna be late to the pub. Because you'll be stood waiting to charge the fekkin thing up again. Limited applications right now. That's all....

Brother in law is a mechanic \tech for Tesla Ireland and that's,a daily row !! people going nuts that they only got 180kms out of a charge so he logs onto there car let's them know you have been doing 180kmh and hour for 90 mins and sometimes 210 kmh so that reduces your battery life just like a tank of petrol he finds it hard to get through to them as he reckons a lot of there customers tend to think they know everything !!o_O

  18. Served my time with my aul lad so imperial is no problem but metric is handier 7\8 and 15\16 and the likes is a pain to divide into when working stairs out :D
