Been trying to find time to swap the steel swingarm for an ally one..... Had the ally one checked over ages ago at Motoliner, Maidstone for 'straight' etc. Finally got to the bottom of what DID have done with their ZJ chain rivet links.... ....IE upgraded the ZVM chains to ZVM-X chains..........still require a ZJ rivet link, but the ZVM-X ZJ link will not fit a ZVM or ZVM2 chain and vice versa...........but also..... .....DID in their wisdom have retained the same part number for both ZJ links...... Anyway, now got the right link and tool to do the job. ...........and have now found out there were two versions of the SS ally swingarm (of the style I have) and I appear to have the earlier one.......IE before the stronger braced version. ...so now I'm thinking should I bother to fit it...... Sometimes I wonder why I bother to get up in the morning. AL
Al, sell or swap it with someone who's doing a MK1 superlight restoration ; ) the swing arm you have was only fitted to the very early model SL/SS and is quite difficult to get hold of ; )
Bit mine was for racing *ahem* lol to be fair I didnt fit it, Paul at Snells did when he prepped the bike !
Long bolt and locknut chain adjusters in a recess in the sides of the SW?......Yep.... This one also has the hoop brace only about what, 35mm deep.........the later one has a brace about 50-60mm deep......changed to that in about 94. Done your bluddy brakes yet? AL
Ah..........valuable then? Mind you it is only going on a 750 SS and I have checked and checked again for cracks.......I even think the circlips will go on having studied the dimensions of the steel and ally one carefully...... ....but just maybe I won't assemble the chain around the swingarm on the bench until I have checked the fit.... AL
Have you hot the runners and chain adjusters? They are difficult to get too. Cost me as much almost for those as the swingarm I fitted
What (hot?) runners?........you mean the chain adjuster blocks? (The bits that the axle goes through?) AL
Lol bloomin ipad. Got runners is what I meant, chain sliders....and then there are the blocks where the axle goes thru at the end with the blot to move wheel forward and backward..whatever they are called
I have got new stainless adjuster bolts and lock nuts; I havanaxle; I have stainless flanged axle nuts; I have the axle blocks wot the axle goes through and slides backwards and forwards; the plastic slider from my steel SW appears it might fit; I have new stainless bolts for fitting all the fiddly bits on; and.........da-da.....I have made a stainless brake plate retainer pin which will screw in.....although if I don't like it, I have a stainless M10 shanked bolt on stand-by, which I will cut off to the right length once it is Loctited in....... ........and.........I have a new longer shanked M10 bolt for the lower shock mount. Have I missed anyfink? With my stands, I bet you a cheese sandwich I can do this without removing zorsts and cans, gear and brake levers etc. I'm hoping to try and get it done this weekend as I am on standby just in case I have to take Madam to hospital. AL
Fortunately on this, the rear cylinder zorst drops in front of the SW arm pivot, and then the system swings up to HL cans..... Do reckon the chain slider from the steel SW arm will fit the ally SW arm?........I thought I checked it but that's the only thing I'm not sure about. AL
Half my race bike was off non Monsters...part of the fun ST2 forks, think swinger was ST2 aswell, 916 shock, 916 fairings, seat unit from a jap thing, 916 throttle, would have put 916 tank on if I could weld brackets. Loved it and would do it again, T9 P4 calipers
I hadn't got enough bottle for solo racing...........tried with a Seeley Trident back in the 70s but didn't get very high results....so I then went over to cars and autocross for a while......stayed with road bikes from the 60s until the late 80s when I switched to sidecars..............I felt a lot safer on this............12 years and only a bruised elbow and broken finger. Like you, I would do it again if I was fit/well enough...........its like a drug with a high that lasts for a week.......only this time I would drive the b*gger.
