I can't seem to find any clear data on the 1198 engine codes between models. I'm trying to find out if MTS engines and Diavel engines are interchangeable. (Currently looking for a replacement MTS twin spark engine) Can anyone confirm that where the engines have the same code, they are in effect the same engine and are a direct swop (Though I can see belt covers are different) ? MTS 2010 } Single spark 2012 } ZDM1198WC 2013 } Twin Spark 2014 } ZDM1198WF ??? 2015 } Variable valve timing 2018 } ZDM1198VT 2018 - Onwards 1260 engine DIAVEL 2010 } Single spark 2015 } ZDM1198WC 2015 } Twin Spark 2017 } ZDM1198WM 2018 - Onwards 1260 engine I'd really appreciate any corrections or input to this listing. Many thanks for looking! EDIT: For reference I found these while searching ZDM1198WP - Monster ZDM1198WR - Monster R ZDM1198WS - Monster S ZDM1198WE - Panigale ZDM1198WU - Diavel ASIA ZDM1198WN - Diavel India
To my knowledge, the twin spark Multistrada engine was not shared with the Diavel but the first generation 1200 Multistrada and Diavel engines are identical except for the air box which on the Diavel is larger. I have replaced components in both engines that have been identical between both models. Andy
Thanks for that Android, that's as I hoped. I was pretty sure they are the same seeing how they are both coded as ZDM1198WC According to wiki, the Gen 2 Diavel from 2015 onwards is a twin spark, and it looks like a non DVT engine. As a twin spark non DVT was fitted to the MTS from 2013 to 2015, I figured it must be the same motor . But I'm not sure of course! I know the Diavel twin spark engine is coded as ZDM1198WM. If anyone can tell me what code number the twin spark MTS 2013 to 2014 is, I would really appreciate it.
Well I called a Ducati independent and a main dealer. No one seems aware of the difference in engine codes...... But trying random letters on Google did bring up a 2013 MTS twin spark engine as ZDM1198WF. This ties in with Android853sp's comment. So it would appear they used a different version engine once they switched to twin spark..... If anyone has a 2013/14 twin spark motor and would care to check their engine number in the garage, I'd be eternally grateful for any confirmation or otherwise.
Ok, I've managed to figure it out myself. Finally figured a 2017 twin spark Diavel engine will fit - which I've now bought. I'll need to do the twin spark to single spark mods as detailed elsewhere. I spent hours checking part numbers between them and found hardly any difference. Injectors, gear ratios etc etc are the same. Belt covers are different but my 2010 MTS covers fit nicely.
I thought the twin spark models had a different piston crown to accommodate the other pug? swirl design in the combustion area apparently.
Rods and piston rings are the same numbers, but the actual piston is different. As you say, it must be for a different combustion pattern with the twin spark system. However, I have read of two conversions now that both say the engine ran well on one plug and with the air bleed blanked off. So much so, that no difference was noted by their owners (Good or bad). I've yet to find that out for myself........soon I hope !
Why not run with the twin plugs, I'm guessing all you would need to change would be to twin post coils?
The 2010 uses stick coils. The twin spark engine uses twin output coils. It should be possible to change the wiring to suit them but it might be more difficult finding a place to mount them. It will probably run fine with the single plugs..
Also it's a wasted spark system I was told, so the ECU has different program for that set up, the coils mount on a lug that is welded to the frame which is not there on single spark models
Funny you would ask - I have just fired the computer up to check on the reassembly of the front sprocket / spacer / washer / seals. Engine is in and running fine at standstill. As with the old engine, it starts instantly. I've run it to temp a few times, checking for leaks etc, but shes not been out on the road yet (Nor likely to for a while). With no load, it revs up no problem. Engine is from an 800 mile 2017 Diavel engine. The Diavel didn't get the DVT until later. So this is about the latest engine that would fit my MTS. This twin spark has some difference that affect installation I hadn't read about, but nothing serious. Biggest is the alternator / cover. The Diavels is bigger than the 2010 MTS. It sticks out a touch further, which isn't a problem, but the real killer is the cover which has two small half moon shaped lugs cast around its edge. Once the engine is in, the cover can't be removed because these two small lugs foul the frame. I don't know if all twin sparks or just the Diavel have this cover. After struggling single handed to get the engine in the frame, I found I couldnt get the cover off. So I had to drop the engine and cut the bastard things off. They don't seem to have any function I can see. A quick smooth off with emery, a touch of black paint and you'd never know. Another problem is the plumbing. The cylinder head take offs are a differnt arrangement. The Diavel uses plastic take offs with the vertical cylinder one having an extra vent that needs blanking off. Needs an extra 90 degree bend and some bits of piping but all easy stuff. Busting to get the thing out!
Its good to know that someone took this on , with no further tips and how to do this.. if i need a different engine , i know now what to do thanks to you , for me ..... did hear a funny rattling sounds coming out from the engine took some tools and half a day later ,, had only the engine ,the frame and wheels left over at the bench , drained al the oil out of the ,oil cooler, oil pipes, engine , drained al the cooling-liquid got the radiator of and than opened the engine both sides nothing weird on the clutch side , on the alternator side the sprocket wheel what the starter connect to the flywheel the intermediate gear pin was half out and the spacer was gone , got the under plate of for the inner oil filter and yes the spacer was in that area .... putting everything together now and see if the sound is gone fingers crossed
Just glad it's helped someone. Hopefully you will have sorted the rattle out now. If not, I have all engine parts less crank and front cylinder if needed. I went through the decision process, trying to figure out which way to go, should I go for a rebuild or replacement engine. Once you start pricing parts it quickly became clear, (in my case) that a later engine with lower miles was a better bet, easier to complete at home and you also have the old engine to strip and sell parts off, which offsets the cost of the replacement engine. Having said all that, the cost of engines from breakers is scary. I saw many old MTS engines at 25K miles +, going for £2500 upwards. (And so many seem to go pop at this sort of mileage - mine had 27K miles) But after 3 months of searching I found a 2017 Diavel twin spark engine @ 800 miles for £1500. Then sold some of the old engine parts for £500, and still have many parts left to sell. Good luck whatever!
Thx almost ready got a little " bit sick " at the moment... yes it is a probably a cold , so i am above 60 and the wife, and the Family told me stay in-doors and don't go in to the attached barn so i have to wait a couple of day,s before i can finish it
Hi i will do the same, i will put twin spark engine in to multistrada 2011, with one spark per cylinder engine, do i need to change cylinder heads? will engine starts instantly? Will i get any loss in preformance?
Finally after 2 years of collecting the parts for an engine block change from a 2011 to a 2014 engine block, so from 2 spark plugs to 4 spark plugs ... it lives again ... and through a lot of patience when installing and adjusting the engine block and connecting the wiring, I have now completed the first 500 km .... how I have missed this motorcycle ... in the meantime I have ridden a GSX1100f and a VTX 1800 .... but what a nice motorcycle this is, the way it handles, accelerated, light and manageable compared to the other engines.... this is a very happy little man
