1990 851 restore project

  1. Hi all
I recently bought a 1990 851 strada that has been messed about with a bit and I want to put it back to original (or as near as) if I can.
It currently has 916 front forks fitted, not sure if this should have had usd ohlins or conventional Marzocchi, I would imagine the Marzocchi forks are going to be really hard to find so will possibly have to settle for the usd ohlins I have been told that monster 900 forks would fit but I would still need to get a suitable tree and yolk and they are not adjustable, but would I be right in assuming that the 92-94 900ss front end will have everything I need including the correct tree and yolk and be adjustable if I could get hold of them ?
There are other things I need to sort but the front end is the most major
    .
    Any advice greatly recieved.

  2. I can't help with the front end, but would love to see pictures!

  3. Nope, i'm in Essex
I call them either, but should have though more about it with this being a UK based forum.
Indeed the 916 fork idea is a bit of an ass imo, especially if the 916 "yokes" are used as they have been on this one as the steering lock stops don't work and you end up with everything hiting the gauges if you aren't carefull.

  4. 900ss carby front end will fit. If you want to go the showa route.

  5. I need to drag it out of the workshop to get some better pics of it.

The '90 bike [whilst in good order] isn't a patch on the '91 handling wise. The early bike has the M1R [conventional] forks and I think [can't remember] a showa rear shock. The later bike has the showa USD forks [i think they're the same forks/yolks as a mid 90's 900SS] and the '91 was the only year they fitted an ohlins to the back of a stock strada. So depends on the model year if you need M1R forks or Showa units. The M1R also uses a bigger front mudguard as you can see in my pics.
other differences, 90 has an alloy tank with lift out filler cap and no lock. 91 has an alloy tank but with lockable hinged cap, 92 bikes were steel but had a breather 'hump' and the whole tank hinged up, the earlier tanks are bolted down which is a pain in the arse!

The M1R is on ebay at the moment Ducati 851 Strada 888 SP4 Collectible Italian Appreciating Classic | eBay
