996sps Project So Far

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by Messer, Mar 31, 2020.

  1. I know, I was talking about that with my mate today.

I’ve not bothered resetting them yet as when it goes to Lee for a desmo service he will be rebuilding the forks and will reset them anyways

  2. My old 748r was like that and I think it quickened the steering up no end.

  3. Are the ohlins forks original, I ask as my 996 sps doesn't have ohlins, it's earlier than yours though, 1999 I think.

  4. 99 is std showa.

  5. Great work , do you mind me asking who is re-plating your parts, what plating is applied?

  8. Wow, what a job you have done, looks new. Never heard of bilthamber but will have a look for it. So did Rich at Luigi Moto give you new bolts or get yours re-plated.

  9. I sent him my old stuff and he sent new stuff straight back on an exchange basis.

mess a lot more expensive that just having it plated, however they are all finished like new, and labelled up etc (even though I measured and recorded everything myself as well)

  10. Might have to give him a ring. Tried plating and passivating some of the bolts myself but the finish isn't good enough for my likening. Thanks

  11. Just been doing little bits and bobs while waiting on a few parts to come to finish it off.

Mainly stripped the nose off and took the radiator off, as it was filthy and also wanted to sort the fan shroud as it had some flaking paint. Also, the lower valve inspection cover is missing one of the lugs to mount the v panel so removed that for replacing

and sanded and buffed the rear hugger and fitted that up.

finally, buffed and polished the fairings - sourced some new ones in OEM paint with the correct colour decals. The ones I had are slightly dark and was never happy with them.

  19. That was a good price, most i see are damaged I'm just waiting for a good one but at a reasonable price :innocent: or its a Chinese one but spray the ends silver.

  20. Just in case you haven’t read about @higgy748 ’s 1048 which had a chinese rad and caught fire, not enough cooling tubes causing the fans to run continuously, I’ve tagged him here for you. Buyer beware etc etc.
