749R, Testastretta engine and carbon fibre fairings (don't go for later plastic faired models). Had a go on my mates R when he got it last year and it's amazing, goes like a bat out of hell, handles superbly and with all th CF even looks good. Future classic and probably less to maintain than an SPS (which is still a nice bike).
Im probably biased, but 996SPS every time. A true classic, with real racing success. But i do think the extra revs of the smaller engines make them a bit more fun. All depends what you want it for really.
Really just thinking of a new 'toy' the 1098s will be main bike. Money in bank isn't earning any interest atm, so think I'm going to spoil myself and have a treat that will hold value if I ever need to secure funds at a later date.
My 749R was maybe the best bike that I have ever owned. It handled better than anything, looked great and would be worth more than my current bike even though it was much older. As mentioned the carbon model especially is the one to go for. Only downside is that there were a few (that I know of ) that blow up the bottom end, do not know if it was a certain batch or just random bikes. Mine was absolutely fine but my mates wasn't. Loved it
996SPS have already started to increase in value - by 50% I would guess? As have 996 R's and 998 R's. If it's value on selling which is a key factor (in my opinion only then the 749R or 999R would be the best buy - along with being the better bike to ride too (possibly ;-) They are at rock bottom prices with some dealers starting to push the prices upwards now (see MCN report a couple of months ago - Ducati Manchester stating prices have bottomed on these R's now). Well, I have put my money where my mouth is and recently bought a 999R and 999R Fila.
Seen a 749r in the flesh this evening and couldn't resist it It will be mine pending an investigation to possible internal scratches on the LED display unit.
Recent similar conundrum. http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f2/theory-9997/ Are you sure the screen isn't cracked, as they suffered from this? Any details of the R?
For me it would have to be the 996 sps or even 996R, far better looking bike Imo, I also think they will always go up in value more than the 749/999,
I know it's a matter of taste & all that , & although i've never ridden a 749 /999 ect , imho it's the ugliest bike i've ever come accross!!! & i'd never want one in my collection !!! But as they say , each to his own ................ ...........................
As i said on the old forum if you like 749 / 999 you may av to go to www.specsavers.co.uk lol ...........
