Help- license expired.

Do you have a local DVLA shop near you? I'd suggest a visit first thing tomorrow and ask them/take your old license in and your debit card/cash to pay!

If you have a biometric passport get on line and renew your lisense. Really quick and easy. As the the vicar said to the nun

 

I just renewed my UK photocard license - at the nearest main post office that issued licences (and you can find which post offices do this on line). I think to do this on line your biometric passport needs to be less than 5 yrs old.

I took my driving license renewal note and passport, but not my old licence or counterpart which was, er, 'lost'. Took around 10 mins after which they gave me a receipt showing I'd renewed, to be used as proof if the police required same. New license arrived around a week later.

In my case I had received a renewal notice and the new licence was applied for a few days before the old one expired.

 

I still have the original green paper one I got when I passed my bike test in '82. I think it said it would expire when I was 70, so a little time left on it then...

Is it still valid?


I naturally have a Swiss one now, but I may as well have a valid UK one too - you never know when it might come in handy.

 

Failure to renew risks a £1,000 fine and the implications of driving without insurance since entitlement to drive legally has ended so invalidating the insurance. Although it does depend upon the terms and conditions of the particular insurance most insurers will avoid liability when the licence has expired - so is worth checking your policy if such a problem arises.

yes you can drive, your licence has only expired not your entitlement to drive.

 

I renewed mine in April as I noticed it expired in Feb.

There were no problems, it took a week for my new license to turn up.

I haven't been fined.

 

Intriguing. You seem to be saying that your legal entitlement to drive is somehow a separate thing from your having a valid current driving licence. I'd be interested to hear what basis there might be for that proposition.

 

Oddly enough, old UK driving licenses dating from before the current type are still valid, provided they are within their expiry date and provided they were never superseded by a subsequent issue. Not many people still have them. And if they have no photograph, they may not be accepted in countries outside of UK.

OK, say you have a driving license issued on a certain date. You apply to DVLA for a fresh licence of the newer type with a photocard, or saying the old one was lost. They issue a new licence, but you still also have the old one. Is the old one still a valid licence? No, because DVLA have power to withdraw the old one when they issue a new one, and they always do so. That is what I meant by "superseded".

I thought that the DVLA sent a reminder on 10yr licences about to expire?

 

I took my International Driving Licence with me to the USA and UAE last year for that very reason.

 

not quite right that mate.null insurance.but if he applys for a new one online he will be fine with the old one untill the new one turns up!.
