Hi all, I'm looking at purchasing my first Ducati ever, it's likely to be 1299s. Is there anything that I should be aware of or look out for? Common issues; chain rubbing on the swing arm, heat from the exhaust, electrical issues etc. Good questions to ask a seller other than the obvious!! Cheers
I think FE was already throwing out mods that he would do. As far as things to look for and problems you'll probably have with the bike: - The hydraulic system is a well known issue. The clutch side especially. Be prepared to replace the slave cylinder otherwise you'll be bleeding the system every week. The Oberon unit is cheap and easy. - You might see coolant around the weep hole. This is normal. - These bikes really benefit from a tune. They stall pretty easy with the OEM fueling map. Removing the charcoal canister (if equipped) helps a bit. - Maintenance intervals are 600, 7500, 15000. The big desmo service is at 15,000. The cost for this varies from dealer to dealer but be prepared to pay 1-2k. It's usually somewhere in the middle. - Dashes are a known weak point. Look for cracks around the edges that could spider web over time. - They run hot. A tune and exhaust greatly help here as well. All in all they're great bikes.
Lock stops on bottom yoke. They are made of cheese. If its been over they with probably be gone and as its not a cheap fix for a couple of broken lugs they will often get left when tarting a bike up after a drop.
You could extend the warranty on purchase of the new bike, up to a extra 2 years, look out for a private sale with some warranty remaining for piece of mind, main Ducati dealer bikes will come with 12 month warranty.
The quickshifters seem to fail quite regularly. I've been through about 3. The latest revision of the part was released about August 2019 and it seems to have fixed my issue with the quickshifter.
What's the issue? Is it clunky changes at low revs or does it just stop working? Did you get it fixed under warrenty?
I first noticed my issue along Donington's back straight going from 4th to 5th. Usually it would be a very smooth change with hardly any drop in power, however this time, there was a delay in changing gears and it nearly threw me out of the seat! From then on it slowly deteriorated over a couple of week until the downshift also stopped working completely and the engine light came on. The dealer replaced it foc under warranty, however, the issue wasn't resolved and the 2nd one failed. By now the bike was out of warranty but the dealer was great and replaced it again which was better. Later on they let me know a new part had been released and replaced it again foc. Now its fully working again smoothly. If it's not smooth in all gears, then it probably needs replacing.
is there a part number change? or just manufacture date? as i have mine changed just before xmas due to the bikes habit of firing me though the screen between 5/6th
Lol I remember the same, would have to hold on tight on the high speed gear shifts! I can't remember exactly, but I think it was just a revision change. The same part number but it's now at something like revision f or g. Has your change fixed the issue?
Same, QS played up on mine on down shift when sometimes it just doesn't detect pressure to initiate. Had it looked at JHP back end of last summer and they said they was having difficulty getting any new parts. Bike hasn't been out since then so suspect it's likely to be still a problem. I'm in two minds to see what the market does and maybe trade-up for the V4.
