748 2002 748e Not Starting

  1. My 30mm socket came today for the flywheel as I’m an impatient cat I’ve gone straight to the garage to take my fly wheel nuts off but the engine rotates 360° now with little effort I’m confused.com
     
  2. Especially as you have no timing belts on...
     
  3. Oh I’ll carry on with the stripping then.
     
  4. As you can tell I’m no mechanic but lots of time on my hands.
     
  5. Are all your valves now closed?
     
  6. Put a screwdriver down the plug holes and put the pistons half way down.

    Then see if you can rotate the cams easily.
     
  7. Would that be the vertical cylinder, plus could water in the cylinder make it stick?

    Water in the cylinder would make it stck, yes.

  10. The piston is halfway down on the vertical cylinder I can rotate the cams half / 90°
     
  11. And all valves are fully closed
     
  12. Do the cams feel as if they are stopping solidly, or springily?
     
  13. There’s no abrupt stop, springy/spongy
     
  14. Don't want to butt in as FE is on the case, if the cam feels a bit springy then you should be able to turn them fully by hand, there is a bit of resistance, don't force them though.

  15. I have had 2 experiences similar to this
    The first on my 748sps. Riding along 40mph it seemed to jerk a bit and a sound like gravel rattling through the belly pan and it dropped onto one cylinder
    When I got it home found the vertical belt was shredded. The cause the exhaust cam was locked solid.
    I kept trying to move it and eventually it turned as if nothing was wrong. Never did find what caused it to jam. I was lucky no Mark's or damage to valves and piston
    The 2nd was a 916sp. Set off from a junction and it went bang and locked up
    That was a valve head breaking off. Lot more damage on that
    Had the head repaired at a place in Northallerton and he sourced me some one piece forged valves.
     
  16. Ok cheers, I’ve turned all 4 cams 360 a few times.
     
  17. Regards to sticking cam belt back on do I just line up all the marks or have I got to get the valve timing done because I’ve moved the crankshaft with no belts on.
     
  18. This might help, you don't have to mark the belts so long as the timing marks are in the correct position.
     
  19. Did you find anything that might have stopped it turning.
     
  20. Thanks Steve, Im just thinking a head. Just a little rust on the head so a Gentle sand with 320 and I’ll continue looking. Cleaned the throttle bodies yesterday with didn’t need it but I did it
