How to move a shed ideas ?

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by iang27, May 10, 2013.

  1. My shed is in a sunspot at the right back corner of our garden and I want to move it to the back left corner. I emptied the junk out and 'expected' to just pull it out of position but did not realise how heavy it actually is until I nearly gave myself a hernia. Needless to say it did not budge !

It is only 8ft x 4ft but still too heavy to slide.

I was going to dismantle it but the wood started splitting when I attempted to prise the nails out.

Any ingenious ideas on how to move it ??

By the way the garden is like a camels back so not flat enough just to drag it along.

  2. if the wood is splitting when you try to take the nails out, then your fooked mate!.:frown:

  3. imagine what the wood will be like at the base

  4. thought you were selling a multi there for a min

  5. Try pick up some (4) railway sleepers, can be got from garden centers and the like.

Jack one end of said shed up, slide sleeper under, same on opposite side.

Lay the other 2 next to the ones under the shed and push the shed along, as the shed is only 4ft you should be able to repeat the procedure as many times as you need to get the shed into position. You might need to lube the top of the sleeper a bit to cut down on friction so you don't damage the shed.

On that note you might need some long lengths of 2x4 to screw into the shed internally on the diagonal to stop it from flexing too much on its epic adventure.

Then use the sleepers in the garden, planters, boarder's etc.

(just noted the "camels back" point. Good thing with this technique is you only need a 2 foot wide area to be flatish.)

  6. Borrow three 8'-0" scaffold poles and four scaffold boards............if you can get one pole under it just under one end, then you can get two boards under same end like rails ebentually with a bit of sweat you can get another pole under between the boards and the shed bottom.........then you can start rolling it..............

.......I've moved empty and full skips the same way and they weigh more than a piddly little shed.

  7. Just nail or screw 2 lengths of 2x2 to it halfway up and get three mates on each corner and carry it. For me the wood is easy to find the threevfriends would be hard

  8. That's the way to do it!
    :upyeah:

  9. As above.

  10. Just put it on Exchange and Mart, that's how folk usually move their sheds.

  11. This way

It works - one warning, screw / bolt them to the frame of the shed, not just through the sides if you get my drift.... can be messy if you get it wrong.

  12. Or coat the base with honey and get some ants to move it,I've heard they can lift fuckin shed loads above their weight

  13. Hi guys i have moved loads of sheds before easy!! i normaly use lenghts of drain pipe or underground pipe use them as rollers Think Egyption! good luck Bomaris

  14. I have moved larger sheds using 4" diameter landscaping poles used as rollers under the shed.It does require that the base of the shed is sound and not rotten.

  15. Cheers guys, plenty of good ideas to get me to give it a go. Better go and see where the water board are digging up and blag some pipes !!

  16. Scaffold poles approx 2" diameter as opposed to 4"..............how far do you really want to lift it up to get them under?

  17. Three mates on each corner? Bit crowded.................

  18. What Al said :upyeah:
Works really well - and it's easy.

  19. 4" poles probably better on a camel back surfaced garden, less rolling resistance:smile:

  20. If the shed base seems too rotten, you could always just move your garden and house over to the right a bit.
