Diavel Timing..

  1. Hi all.
2012 diavel carbon 10k miles loved like a child. Wanted for nothing.....that's were the good news ended!! Long story short. Rod bearings went, crank sent off for regrind, over sized bearings installed. Doesnt sound so painful when you say it quick!!. Anyway I've most the engine reassembled at the mo but waiting for new head gaskets to turn up as the original ones on inspection were starting to fail!!. I made no marks on belts when disassembling as this seemed to be the least of my probs. I'm going through the timing procedure in my head and want to know if I'm somewhere close to it. If I get my horizontal cylinder to tdc. And make sure the cam way t slots are facing the right way (t's facing out I think) so both valves fully closed position. Can I then rotate engine from crankshaft side clockwise 90 degrees so vertical cylinder is now at tdc. Can I now place cam way t slots the correct way (t's facing in) again so both valves are in the closed position and install my belt. I'd install the vertical belt over the drive pulley only so I can hook it on after I've rotated the engine 90 degrees. Of course I would have started everything off with the drive pulley mark in line with the engine case line. To make sure horizontal cylinder was at tdc. Does this sound right...
    Thanks in advance...

  2. I'm not sure where the T's sit when the vert cylinder is at TDC at the start of its firing stroke but at the timing position with line on the casing lined up with the dot on the bottom pulley, the horiz is at TDC at start of firing stroke with the legs of the T's pointing away from the engine. I'm fairly sure that on these engines the T of the vertical cylinders also point outward at the timing position, unlike the earlier Testastretta engines.
If the engine is rotated 270ยบ from the timing position the vertical cylinder should be at TDC with both valves fully closed.

  3. It's as I thought. The factory use a locking tool to hold the cams on place with the legs of the T uppermost.

The tool is kept in place until the cambelts is fitted and tensioned.

  4. Yeah I checked the position.on the t slots and the t faces away from engine. Next thing looking from generator side of the bike with crankshaft tool to turn engine, do you think its 270degree in an anti clockwise direction (or 90 degrees clockwise) to get vertical cylinder to tdc. Once it's at tdc I'm guessing I can set the t's again to face away from engine meaning both valves closed...

  5. No need. At the timing position all the T's on both camshafts of both cylinders face outward on these engines. That's what I was trying to explain above.

  6. Cool that simplify things. H cylinder at tdc with timing mark lined up with case and all t's facing out...

  7. After the belts are on cautiously turn the engine through 2 revolutions making sure that there is no contact and that everything still lines up.

  8. Bang on spent last 3 days getting the remainder of the engine together heads on with new head gaskets, all torqued down, all cooling pipes back in place and connected all wiring back in place. Belts timed and tensioner to 110hz. Hand cranked over to check for interference. Spun up engine without plugs in to circulate oil around filter cooler and engine. Then nervously hit the starter button....feels like I won the lottery, she fired up straight away... happy happy days....

  9. Good news. All you need is this lockdown to end now so that you can get out on it.

  10. I need to get a chain link now. I cut the chain off as the bike was held together with ratchet straps hanging from a girder. And I cant find the eni spec coolant (pink stuff). I ran it with straight water yesterday just so I didnt cook the engine to test it then drained it off as I wont he using the bike until i have everything just right. Got the trusty blackbird for a cheeky spin....

  11. Enni Permanent Speziale. It's an OAT based ready mixed antifreeze solution, there are plenty equivalents.

  12. Sound. I'll go search that now..cheers

  13. off topic here slightly but cant remember if coolant should be ethylene glycol based or non e/g based..

  14. The newer OAT coolants should be used. The Agip is a pain to get a hold of, but OAT is readily available as it's used across the car industry. It's pink in colour, not blue. Halfords sell it for instance

  15. Magic stuff. Cheers..I replaced it before and think it was easier to put a man on the moon than try and find this stuff!!
