Replacement Tyres for Multi 1200?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Martimulti, May 2, 2012.

  1. Hi, I have just joined the Forum and trawled through most of the threads and don't see one which discusses tyre replacements (fully) for a 1200. From what I have read it appears Michelin Road Pilots 3 get the big thumbs up? Can anyone help or direct me to a thread that discusses a tad more fully than I have read? Thanx in anticipation.:upyeah:

  2. Hi Marti and welcome to the forum :D
The forum is only a few weeks old, a kind of phoenix from the ashes of the long standing Ducatisti forum that died a few months back!........hence not that much 'content' here yet (but picking up pace slowly but surely as more and more owners find their way here;-)
Indeed wherever you look the PR3's are favourite choice and I've not read a bad word about them from anyone that's tried them on the MTS12........I have a pair but barely scrubbed in yet.
I'm sure you'll get some good feedback here soon :)

  3. hi there, I have had 3 sets of dunlop sportmax sportsmarts so far, very very happy with them, u should see the steam coming off them when i finish my commute to and from work and thats not spiritted riding, just simply getting-to-work motorway speeds riding...

The pilots apparently also very good but I have never tried them - although I dont really like the tread pattern on them...but thats me being vain.

  4. What kind of mileage do you get out of a set Bugs?

  5. not loads, I am on 15000 miles now, so thats 1 set of scorpions to start with plus the tyres...etc....I guess 4-5 k miles, rear lasts longer than front
something like that, not major miles and I guess you could stretch it to 6k - its just that I use my bike everyday and for example with the big 15k service coming up I might get the front changed as well as I had the back done due to a puncture about 2 months ago...(saves telling the wife about multiple costs!)

  6. Hi Marti, well I put the Pilot 3s on not long after i bought the bike, improved the handling, lost the vagueness it had but that could be put down to the old tyres. I have posted a review on them on a family tour of Scotland in the wet, in the tyre section, but suffice to say I had no problems at all, I also have just returned from a very very wet trip to Bordeaux, the tyres were faultless.
I have ridden on all makes of tyre and I find these the best for our weather, I have ridden on basically track tyres and then limped home when its rained, I cannot be fashed with that any more and want an all round tyre, they do it for me.
The MCN regularily rates them highly, as do most of the bike mags.
I also like the way they look, but that is a personal thing!!

  7. Yes, my front seems to be wearing out quicker than the rear. Funny - on all my previous bikes (45 years' worth) the rears have worn out quicker. Wonder why the change. Perhaps its because the front brakes are so good now, and the ABS lets us use them harder than ever. And there are no speed limits about how hard we can brake!

  8. Michelin PR3's are very good on the multistrada in both wet and dry (PLUS they seem to give good mileage)
A rear lasts me about 6,000 - 7,000 miles and the front will do 8,000 at least. As soon as the Scorpions had worn out I went with PR3's and after 22,000m can only say they are very good.
Just did a 2 day 700 mile of very wet riding in France and even a worn PR3 on the rear would not let go in a straight line. The whole bike would shift / twitch a bit on corners due to the water and surface conditions but that was all - great fun!

  9. Another 1 here Marti for Michelin Pilot Road 3's. Just changed my Scorpion's after nearly 6,000 miles but as you have said the front has worn out the same time as the rear which is not the norm but after that mileage I can't complain. Haven't had the chance for a proper ride yet as only lightly scrubbed them in so far.

  10. Hi can only echo much of what everyone else has said here; Pilot Road 3s are great. Managed to distroy the rear scorpion at 3000 miles, had the road 3s fitted and at 7600 miles now and the rear still has loads of life left. Road in the wet quite a bit and these tyres give you so much confidence, dry they are still great. They look a little odd with the slits in but I see no reason not to refit these tyres again.

  11. Thank you for all your comments...looks like the Pilots are the favourite. I must now get some prices. Will keep you posted.

  12. PR3's on my PP. 1700kms so far and I'm very impressed. Unheard of wet weather grip-like riding in the dry. Superb feedback and feel. Keep an eye on the inflation pressure though.

  13. I'm on my second set of PR3s - very good, esp. in the wet. Only got 4,600 miles out of the first set - the rear was worn out and the front had a bit of life left in it, but I changed as a pair anyway. All of these miles were in the summer/autumn and lot were with a pillion. The PR3s were much better when worn down than the original Scorpions, which I changed at 4,000 miles even though they weren't worn out - they just didn't inspire confidence.

  14. Have used PR3's on a track day and was told beforehand that you might feel the front "squirm" under heavy braking due to all the slits in the tyre pattern. I never felt it on track but have felt a very slight movement on the road under heavy braking. Thinking about it the more worn the tyre the less it would flex and I cant remember if the tyre was worn on the track day or not.

  15. On further inspection I notice that both front and back tyres (originals) are close to requiring replaced and I have just broken the 3k on the oddo....that is the first time ver in my 30'odd years of riding bikes. it's weird I normally get two rear tyres for one front tyre. Also noticed very heavy feathering on both tyres, I normally see that on the rear of my Tuono but never on my front!?

  16. On my second set of PR3s and find them a brilliant all weather road tyre, found them a little 'squirmy' on the track, front and back. The main grooves get quite wide toward the edges so this might be the cause of the squirminess (is that even a word?!)

  17. Did you reduce your tyre pressures for the track Mike?......I remember someone saying that as the PR3's (and some other Michelins) have a 'softer' carcass (tyre walls) than many tyres the "usual" recommended track tyre pressures don't apply and they're better left at normal road pressures, or just a little less if the weather is cool.

    How's 'family' life?!

  18. Hi Andy, I did drop the pressure but only by 5psi, my mate ran full pressure on his bike and felt the same, wasn't too bad and certainly didn't spoil our day. Might be a different story if u were on your riding limit tho?
All good so far thanks Andy, Going out to do a few Photorally points today while mother and son celebrate being a month old over with the in laws! :)

  19. Yep, another thumbs up for the PR3's... great from the off, and some 6000 miles later still going strong! To be honest, the tyre fitter did say I would easily get 8000 miles plus out of them, and he wouldn't see me for ages (punctures permitting), but I didn't believe him... I do now! Great grip, especially in the wet and the cold.
