Honda 400/4 Rebuild

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by comfysofa, Feb 8, 2020.

  1. Yeah - is for me - this bike has technically been in the family since new. I told my step mum a few weeks back that is was rebuilding it and she got quite tearful over the phone. She still misses my dad more than ever and says she frequently walks round the house shouting at him (in a nice way)!

Well, in the garage today (was in yesterday as well, but on with other stuff...)

Kinda made a start....the more thats bolted to the frame the less stuff there is lying around....

  2. My main problem is more time than anything else....should be able to get the swing arm on today along with the rear and front footpegs....after that as i say is time....

Chrome platers doesnt open again til the end of this month, then is 3 months delivery.
Engine cases need to be blasted, then coated, then get the engine rebuilt (thats going to be the biggest issue/need for more money to be spent)

I just tend to not see the whole job....just little slices....deal with the swing arm and pegs today, forget about the rest of the stuff....

  3. Just for the record (not mentioned it before) it is going to be modified but, im going to restore all the stuff that comes off and stick it into storage....stuff that going to be modified...its a bit of a list...my kids technically own this bike, but, between me and you (the whole forum) ill probably buy it off them.....

Wheels: New stainless spokes and alloy rims. The old steelies will be rechromed and stored.
Electrical system: Points replaced with digital ignition, wiiring loom replaced with motogadget m-unit. (This'll do away with relays, fuses, and simplify the whole wiring system. Ill be using all the original switchgear) Essentially upgrade and improve what cant be seen....
Lights: LED where possible (more reliable and keep battery drainage down)
Fixings: Stainless where possible maybe some ti (not for weight saving, its a rolling anville from a weight point of view) more for brightness and resistance to the elements. All the old fixings will be retained and when ive got a big box, get them replated.
Front Brake: all standard but its got a weird slave cylinder midway...id like to get rid of that and just have the master at the top with the caliper at the bottom to simplify it...not sure if i can yet though....think ill need educating on that one...

Airbox refurbed but it wont be going back on....got some small alloy trunpets coning for the carbs...make it a little throaty and make give it a simpler look. Itll only ever see dry sunny days so im not worried about wet/rain getting in...
