Slipper clutches

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Bagley1098, May 1, 2013.

  1. Would fitting a slipper clutch stop the thudding from the clucth plates, which are not badly worn and still allow the ring a ding/ rattle when the clutch levers pulled in?
I have always liked the rattle of the plates, but it never sounds or feels right mechanically to hear the plates thudding against the basket.
Obviously there are benifits when down shifting rapidly on the road & track, but are there other benifits?
And what are the pit falls?

Certainly a popular but expensive mod.

  2. Nope, not really... Most of the noise your hearing is coming from the primary gears, not the clutch pack itself.

  3. As Nelly has said it makes no difference to the sound you hear with an open clutch cover.

Personally I wouldn't do without my slipper clutch, they maybe expensive but worth every penny IMO (Assuming you buy a decent one). To reduce the sound a closed cover would be your best option.

  4. It wouldn't make any difference to the sound, but I highly recommend fitting one. I wouldn't be without one now.

  5. I've recently picked one up for my 1098.
It was previously fitted to a 748R.

Am I right in thinking/reading I need a different (larger) nut?

    Available from dealer or Nelly?

  6. The larger nut was for the 1098 shaft so yes I would presume that you do. I had to find a new one when I fitted my last dry slipper to my 1098. I have a nut but think it is the smaller one, will have a look tomorrow

  7. I have a larger nut you can have for a small amount.
if you measure the shaft ti ensurr its the correct size and add a pic of the clutch to make sure we are on about the same thing

  8. have you also got the spacer that sits behind the slipper unit.

if you have the DP clutch..without the spacer it may catch the outer basket retaining bolt heads.

ps the securing nut is about 40 or 45 quid eek

  9. Please define "decent one"

  10. Sigma, Bucci, STM, DP, Fast by Feracci to name a few

  11. Ramp, ramp and ball etc etc?

  12. Either really if they're well maintained...

i had an FBF ball/ramp and a Ducati corse 4 post ramp only, they all require lots of maintenance recommended 500 miles between strips but I stretched this to a 1000 for the road

  13. and 6 ramps not just 3 like the cheepy 749r stuff....

  14. Thanks Phil,

I'll post up some pics of what I have when it arrives.
    It's a 6 ramp and ball JHP taken from a 748R.

Wont the top hat spacer be the same or is that also bigger?
If the bits start to add up to convert I'll prob sell what I've bought and buy a new 1098 one.
£45 is daft! Isn't it just an M25 nut and washer?

  15. yes its crazy.
thats what I paid for the smaller one and a spacer and washer

    hi
    just got in from work
the top one is the 999 size
I believe the large one is the 1098. it came with my DP Clutch and was too large .
if your using another make clutch unit - then my advice re the DP clutch may not apply re it rubbing the basket boltheads.

I will dig my internal caliper out - its about 25mm. measures about 24.5 across the threads

  17. this one has a built on support washer

  18. Did you buy your DP one new?
Did it come with two different nuts and spacers?

  19. it was new but had been fitted to a bike and taken off. hence unboxed.
it was all there except the spacer and the nut was incorrect.
