Gear whine?

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by noddysbestfriend, May 12, 2013.

  1. I've been riding my '93 750ss around town lately and not wearing earplugs has made me aware that it whines quite a lot when on the move. It sound like transmission whine. Does anybody else have this noise or do you think it might be something that needs investigating? I realise it's difficult without hearing it but just wondered what others might think.

  2. I never wear ear plugs..........and I can hear mine whine at certain revs in the lower gears

  3. I think I'm always going to wear earplugs, open clutch covers and fairings that act as sound boxes don't offer any comfort to the inquisitive ear

Went for a ride today with a New Arai lid. good fit + earplugs = nice exhaust drone and faint tamborine noises at traffic lights only :upyeah:

Sorry, that's not really very helpful!

  4. It's gear whine, and perfectly normal. Just about every bike I've ever owned has done it - I actually really like the sound.

  5. could be the crank bearings. my 851 is doing it and I pulled the LHS cover off, thinking it was the alternator bearing in the LHS cover, you can move the crank up and down by hand about 1mm. so it needs to be stripped. 900ss and 851 bottom ends are very similar. i guess you could maybe pull the dry clutch cover off to check, not sure on mine if the movement is evident on the clutch side but would make sense it is

  6. I've always considered it normal. I have a 2009 Suzuki Bandit 1250 that has done it from new.

Nowt to worry about if you ask me :upyeah:

  7. I agree here, but sooner rather than later! its very difficult to diagnose by post.

  8. triumph go to great effort to remove the whine from the bonneville engines - its an inherant noise in all modern bike engines caused by straight cut gears in the gear box and primary drive.

  9. Thanks for the replies. I was worried that it could be caused by a bearing with play in it and the gears not meshing fully. I'm pretty sure I test rode it last year without ear plugs and I can't recall thinking it was as pronounced as it is now. Does anybody know if there are any other ways of checking the bearings in situ and are there likely to be any other symptoms. Thankyou all for your help.

  10. I can tell you there will soon be another symptom.........................

.........you will start to look around for a 900 engine.......not because the 750 has gone wrong, but that's what a lot of 750 and 600 owners do.

  11. No no no Al. I don't want to go there. To be honest I would have liked a 900 but they fetch more money than a 750 and I couldn't afford one at the time. Having said that I really do like my 750 and it's quick enough for me (just). I recently read an article in one of the classic bike mags which chose the 750 as being the best of the bunch as they described it as the best 'balanced' bike in the supersport range - I dunno but it made me happy.

  12. Odd because despite having basically the same bottom end my Monster has some noticeable gear whine but the 916 doesn't. I put it down to the Monster having done less miles and recently rebuilt that it might be tighter? That said the 916 rattles so much I wouldn't hear the gears anyway...

  13. I agree with everything I just said............I mean, what you just said.........

Mind you if someone gave me a 900 engine, I don't think I would say 'no'......

  14. There are a world of factors, it could be due to the different acoustic signature of the water cooled engine over the air cooled one, the fairing affecting how noise is or isn't reflected, production tollerances, many factors.

  15. Gear whine?

I thought someone was going to complain about their riding kit.

  16. I think you need to find someone local who's familiar with them to have s listen for you. Cornerspeed in Sutton-in-Ashfield are well regarded, tho I have no personal knowledge of them Cornerspeed
