  15. Mate, they look really good, ties in nicely with all those lovely rock walls. But you might need to put a brace in each, they look to me like they will sag?

  16. Do you think so? I was thinking about that. They’re 4x4 on the verticals and 4x2 on the horizontals, each with a span of 183cm and I notched out the 4x4s so the horizontal slats would be recessed into them, hoping (planning:thinkingface:) the fact they’re recessed would prevent twisting. The whole lot is then bolted together with M10 bolts.

However, I’ve never done it before:astonished:.

I think I’ll get some more 4x2 and fix it at 45 degrees across the horizontals, would that sort it?

    TIA

  17. Or just measure how high off the floor they are in the middle at the moment, then leave it a bit to see if/how much they drop.

If they do drop (A bit) you can Pull them back to square (Trapezoidal) with a ratchet strap or spanish windlass, then put the diagonals in. The diagonal is more effective in compression, provided the ends bear directly on the frame members, but work in tension too provided the fixings can’t creep.

As the individual gates are quite narrow you may well “get away with it”. After all, there are no diagonal braces on pallets, and they are pretty rigid!

  18. I thought for a moment you were talking about the top picture and thought that was really bright: like daylight in fact.
Then scrolled down a bit and found the other photo’. That’s more appropriate to evening use!

    Looks good though.

  19. Last day of helping Cambridge Council shielded list visits, been a real pleasure and a very rewarding experience taking me all over Cambridgeshire. There is a huge national effort being made by all sorts, much of it under the radar, I am blown away.

  20. Yep, there is a chance that the sag will be very minimal, pretty hard to tell, for me, from a photo? But also consider that a brace, if you do fit one, wont look out of place or detract from your gates, IMO.
Also, don,t drive your quad bike through the closed gates. You need to open them first. DAMHIK!
