The One That Got Away - What Was Yours...

  1. Here's mine, what's your worst bike regret :worried:

I bought this Rickman (Factory Built) Z1B from Eddy's in Leeds for £1200 in 1982 when I was 18. It was bought as I was using the York Glassworks tool room to help me Turbocharge my Z1000 and I needed a bike for the summer.

Stupidly I sold it a year later to throw more money at the Z1000 - I got the £1200 back that I paid and it went to the South Coast, Plymouth I think

It was Yellowy / Lime Green but a tax check shows it as blue and not taxed since it last ran out in October 1986!!! I didn't expect that

It could be stick in a 'barn' somewhere :bucktooth:

    That ^^^ little (900ss) fella.

I built it in 2015 but a combo of a track accident/injury (on a different bike), break up with a girlfriend, low point in my career which also meant I had less time to ride, plus the hassle of keeping 4 motorcycles MOT’d, serviced, insured and taxed all conspired to make me lose interest in bikes (and life generally tbh) for a while and pushed me into selling it.

It was immense fun to ride - very light and fast, wanted to wheelie everywhere (which was eye-opening when there’s no backstop on the seat), changed direction like a fly and was kind of like riding a rocket powered BMX.

Within months of selling it I wished I hadn’t and I wanted to buy it back off the guy I sold it to but I’d lost his number. However, he contacted me out of the blue in March but unfortunately I’d just paid a big VAT bill and couldn’t spare the cash at the time even though it wasn’t a lot of money and he was selling back to me for what I sold it to him for. So we started to negotiate “deposit plus payment later” terms, only for CV19 to put the cat amongst the pigeons and when I contacted him a few weeks back to say I had the cash ready to buy it off him, he said he can’t bring himself to part with it and had changed his effing mind :pensive: :triumph:

  9. A few. I seem to have a knack of selling a bike when it’s at its lowest value.

  10. I can sing a few bars of that tune too. Hard times in 2012 forced me to sell my beloved full Ohlins 748R for £4,500. They’re probably fetching twice that now. I suppose that bike also counts as another OTGA actually.

  12. I know it’s not that long ago and I could probably buy another one tomorrow but I still miss it, it was a mental bike to ride (once I stopped the suspension from trying to eject me at every opportunity) and really reliable which is no mean feat for an MV.

  15. From what I have heard, if it were yours, you wouldn't fit on it. :yum

Anyhoo - beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I note that you ride a Mutley, so "pots and kettles". ;)

  20. The first bike I ever got my knee down on was a DT125 at the age of 17, on my first ever ride on a motorcycle. Unfortunately it was shortly followed by my hip, shoulder, elbow and arse (or it might have been my arse then my elbow, but I sometimes find it difficult to tell one from the other)
