Cheeky lunch-timer around the lanes. Converted mine to a 1x drive now and added some nerdy clipless pedals....Got my elbow down...
Basically dump the front derailleur and 3 x cogs for a single one. I also upgraded the crank (BB) and arms. If I can't play with motorbikes then this will have to do.
My understanding is: x1 one front sprocket rather than 2 or 3, but with a large range on the rear cassette. MTB rear cassettes with a x1 drive front sprocket are as large as dinner plates! Some prefer extra front sprockets to get the range/combination of gears. Just a another fad/marketing ploy??
Initially my front clicker broke and there were two teeth missing from the old large ring. I don't play in the mud, or go up or down mountains. I went up two teeth from the old middle ring I was using most of the time. The 1 x 9 I now have works just fine for the road/gravel riding I'm doing.
Fair enough - I try to keep up with my daughter who flies downhill like a ninja but crawls uphill - I need and love my granny ring for those pesky steep climbs. So old school eh...but... old habits die hard (also tight ££).
Off road and CX bikes, 1X was a game changer. The gearing is lower off road anyway and you don’t need to be in the cadence “sweet spot” for extended periods as the terrain is constantly changing. If you use the inner chainring during a CX race, you’ve already lost so no point in another mech to fail/get bunged up with mud. On Road, it’s the next marketing fad to get you to buy something new, completely useless
Found this old photo of me having a go at racing - must of been shit if I was carrying it pre children so probably early 90’s
My new steed!! It was delivered with a small chip on the frame so I was given £100 in store credit which seemed fair. Trouble is I can’t stop looking at it!! Just got back from my first spin, I’m embarrassed to say it was just under 10 miles..... seemed like a 100!! How you people do the silly miles I have no idea! I need a lie down...
Fab day out on the mtb yesterday, a circuit around Bransdale just above Helmsley, Gods country tha knaas! Forgot the suncream and my arms are toasted to ribbons today!
you know the answer to this As long as you haven’t got any - much quoted recently, “underlying health issues” then it will be 10 miles every other day for a while then 20 etc and before you know it you’ll be crunching miles. Apart from back and general joint stuff, being overweight is my biggest handicap but finding it very difficult this time to lose it.
Another venture into the Peak District today although really overtired from no sleep (night shift) but.... apart from an old hag warning me about parking in villages, spouting on about CV19 and how she was being hostile (managed to keep calm and say thank you - for once, must be tired) it was a cracking ride. Not ridden the MTB for months and my legs knew it. 20 miles /1250ft / time: long enough Oh, plus one puncture.....
