Afternoon All, Been getting stuck in gear occasionally and had a slight oil weep from the alternator cover so thought I'd take a look. As soon as I took the cover off, I could see one end of the top return spring had snapped off and was sitting in the bottom. The spring was free to spin around. I've ordered an flywheel holder to get the flywheel nut off. Would anyone replace both springs while in there or just replace the top one that's broken? Also does anyone have the link to the 749 workshop manual or pdf so I can do the job properly? Thanks for your time. Aaron
Ok, ta. Presumably it’s no more involved really to do both. They’re on the same mechanism once it’s off anyway aren’t they? Any luck on a manual?
Yes, they’re easy to do once the shift arm is off. It’s not a unique system to749. If you can find any manual bar Panigale, it’s basically the same process.
Lining up 2 lines in 2nd gear, check same distance on lever up n down iirc. Bound to be more in it than that!
Aaron, workshop manual download at this location, scroll down to find the 749 ones https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/free-ducati-owner-workshop-manuals.593/page-7#post-1309624 section N7.1. There is a tool 88713.1091 to set the correct alignment but there are videos on you tube to get around that, although I could not make the alternative methods work
I scribe lines on the inner case marking the position of the gear change plate before removing it so that I can realign it when I put it back together. Haven't had a problem.
Derek, that is a good method for when the springs break, I found not so good when the selector arm had to be replaced, although it may have just been me.
Fair enough. I have found that lining up so that the selector fork is centred over the 2 pins of the selector drum with the gear box in 2nd has worked for me.
Thanks for the help all. All done, easy job for anyone who is capable of changing batteries in a tv remote. Just need the right tools, don’t cut corners using bodged tools, you’ll just give yourself more grief.
