748 748 Tank Cap Lock.

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Bristol748, Jun 7, 2020.

  1. I am new to this forum and have done a search, but can't find the information I am after. Apologies if this has been asked before.

Having owned a 2002 748 from new, I sold it after 6 years to buy a Hypermotard and have always regretted selling it. I have just bought the 2002 748 in the photo and want to get it back to pristine. It currently has a non standard quick release fuel filler and I want to put it back to standard. The bike itself is "honest" and has 15k miles and a good service history. It just needs a few minor bits sorting to make it mint again.

Does anyone have any experience of the Chinese kits that come with a new ignition, fuel cap and seat lock. They are only about £50 so I am guessing they are cheap rubbish and not worth bothering with?

Is it possible to get an OEM filler cap lock made to suit your original key?

    Any help gratefully received.

  2. Welcome to the Forum Bristol748:upyeah:. I don’t have any direct experience in this regard but I would have thought you might be able to get a 2nd hand petrol filler cap from a salvage yard, any 748/926/996/998 should fit, then either have a decent locksmith adjust the tumblers in the barrel so your key fits or remove the tumblers completely so any suitable long blade like your key will turn and release the catch.

  3. Hello, i took delivery friday of said chinese fuel cap and it fits fine but the lid will not close fully, fucking piece of crap:mad:, i paid 23 quid for it off ebay and didn't really think it would be any good and the skt cap screws that come with it are the wrong diameter, i would try to find a genuine one and refurbish which is what i'm going to do with mine(at some point).:upyeah::)

  4. Thanks for that, I will get on the case.

Just watched a YouTube video on changing a barrel lock to a new key. Looks easy enough, thanks again.

  5. The only good point i can say about the chinese one is, spares if needed. :upyeah:;):fist:

  6. I haven't previously heard of the type of kit you refer to. It seems counter intuitive to me to have a "quick fill" cap that has a key? I fitted a quick fill or splash and dash cap from Design Corse to my 748R and, in accord with its description, it is not lockable.

I can only assume a previous owner lost keys to the bike and so replaced all components requiring a key via a kit. If you are bent on having an OEM fuel cap then @West Cork Paul's suggestion would be the option to take. However, if that is not a major driver, are any of the parts you refer to not fit for purpose? If the replacement cap fits neatly, opens properly and the ignition and tail take the key and operate properly I would not jump to the conclusion that replacement is necessary for the sake of it.

  7. Hi

Sorry didn’t make my intentions clear. The bike has a non lockable quick fill cap fitted and I want to return the bike to standard.

  8. There's always a few on ebay, some with keys at reasonable price..

  9. Ideally you want all 3 locks to be the same key. Might be able to use the internals from the Chinese locks in the genuine part.

  10. I have a standard cap from an 2000 St2, the key is a copy but it works fine. I don't know if the 748 used a different cap but if you are interested I'll send you a picture or two.

  11. Afternoon All,
Bristol- you can remove the key barrel from a used cap, insert your key and file/grind the brass tumblers until flush with the alloy barrel that turns within the latch mechanism. OK, other keys may now fit this lock but who nicks 2 gallons of juice these days.

Ignition lock- has anybody been able to remove the barrel from the alloy casing of the ignition lock? I have both the key and the lock but I need to remove it to adjust the tumblers to keep the old style key.

  12. I’ve just done what Chris 748SP suggested. I was looking for a good OEM fuel cap on eBay but in the end ordered a new one. Removed the barrel inserted my original key filed off the high spots. All good.

  13. You can remove the barrel. You need to drill a small hole, 3-4 mm through the aluminium housing where the end of the key barrel is, in line with the tumblers. The barrel has a extra tumbler at the bottom that is spring loaded. When the barrel is pushed into the housing this last tumbler springs out into a recess. To release it you need to push it in through the hole you drilled with the key inserted so all the other tumblers are flush too. Once you have the new or modified tumbler in place glue up the hole.

  14. Just saw a thread on here explaining it with pictures. Search for ignition barrel removal.

  15. No drilling involved when removing the filler cap lock.
