Monster S4 Not Starting

  1. The issue would appear to be fuelling then. Try the cheap stuff first. Tears in, blocked or loose hoses. Blocked fuel filter. As said there are videos of ‘Redneck’ injector cleaning. Then there is the fuel pump and pressure regulator.

  2. My S2r 800 always needs the fast idle fully on from cold and no throttle, always fires up.

  3. Hello all, many thanks for your individual comments and advice and I finally got around to removing the airbox this afternoon, what a job it was to remove the 2 bellmouths o_O o_O
I disconnected the two injector plugs and made up 2 flying leads to connect a 9v battery to the injector socket and can confirm that they both “click” when touching the lead to the battery terminal simulating the pulse that they receive.
Now the big question, how do you remove the plastic injectors from the aluminium body ? Starting with the horizontal cylinder injector, I removed the 2 Torx T20 screws that secure the holding plate above the injector and then tried lightly to twist and lever up/out but no joy and I didn’t want to try too hard for fear of breaking something.
    Once again, thoughts/comments greatly appreciated.
Photo of my injection system attached... and in addition, I looked at the fast idle assembly and would assume that with it “on”, the cam should come into contact with the throttle cam assy and open it slightly. However in my case, the fast idle cam does not come into contact with the throttle opening cam, adjustment required there I suspect :upyeah: 393A063D-98AC-4133-9342-4E94C8A8A80F.jpeg

  4. If you want to remove them then undo the torx and remove the retainer. You will then have to overcome the O rings holding them in place.[IMG]
As they are side feed then you will need to back flush clean them. Watch part 1 and 2

  5. Commiserations, you have hit on an awkward job there, you can only persevere as you are already by swivelling and carefully rocking while pulling upwards. If you have some rubber grease, usually red in colour, then you can work it into the base of the injector where it meets the O-ring. Again carefully, you can warm the whole thing with a good hairdryer which also helps.

  6. Hi Chris, many thanks for the prompt and informative reply to my query. Looks like I’ll be using a combination of brute force and heat from my heat gun tomorrow morning :upyeah::)

  7. Hello all, spent a bit of time this afternoon working on the injectors. Managed to remove the horizontal cylinder injector and sprayed injector cleaner through it so that it came out of the gauze fuel filter (Back flush). Went to remove the vertical cylinder injector and got the first T20 torx screw out but the next one stuck half way and started to round off :sob::sob: so screwed them both back in so not able to back flush that injector :worried:.

Then removed both plugs and turned the engine over, video of working injectors attached....

This leaves me to think that it has to be timing as I have both spark and fuel, however the mechanical timing is spot on as I have double and triple checked the timing marks after changing the belts. Grrrrr, phone call to my friendly independent Ducati Specialist tomorrow morning me thinks

  8. I can't remember in fine detail/spray pattern, but looks "ok-ish" and certainly sound ok. Your vid showing engine finally starting cut off quite short - where are you at with idling and running now? will it only run continually with spray assistance? When it was running/responding to throttle, it didn't look that bad to me.

  9. The fuel should be a mist not a jet

  10. Does that mean insufficient fuel-pump pressure then do you think?

  11. Hi Chris, no further forward with getting the engine to run again after Sunday nights video, where it was briefly held at around 5K revs but died as I closed the throttle :worried: I then concentrated on the injector and fuel feed side of things.

  12. Mmmm, not sure how to address that problem, could be the ecu not controlling the injectors properly  certainly a question for the Ducati Specialist tomorrow morning :upyeah:

  13. Agree - low power cranking conditions alone can cause this, particularly on a bike.

  14. I had a dirty injector on my 999. Fortunately I was able to clean it using the Redneck method. It initially was sending out a jet of fuel but after a couple of minutes running carb cleaner through it the jet became a mist. In the end I did both injectors. As yours are side fed you cannot use the Redneck method. Anybody with a solution other than taking them to an injector specialist.

  15. Hi Chris, I managed to remove the horizontal injector and connect a 9v battery across the socket pins to open the injector. The Wynn’s carb cleaner outlet tube was a nice fit into the output of the injector and I managed to spray quite a bit through the injector whilst cycling the battery contact to open and close the injector multiple times. Nice steady flow of cleaner came out of the side feed gauze filters :upyeah:

  16. Yes. There is no timing adjustment. It is wholely determined by the ECU and it's signal from the crank sensor.
As above, the spray pattern doesn't look good.

  17. :upyeah:

  18. As mention earlier, the injectors should be spraying not squirting. Leaving that aside for a moment the horizontal injector didn't look like it was passing the same amount of fuel as the vertical. If you can't get the other Injector out you could try emptying all the fuel out and poring a couple of bottles of injector cleaner in then priming the system and leaving it to soak for a while to see if it will soften up/dissolve the gum that's clogging up the injectors?

  19. I still think it's fuel pressure or lack of. Have you checked the hoses in the tank? If they are the original Ducati hoses they can't handle the ethanol very well.

  20. Ah, that’s a good idea :upyeah: one that doesn’t involve stripping the injection system down.
