Bump Start, Last Time?

  1. Few threads on starting issues got me thinking about bump starting a bike.
I think the last time I did this wan in the early 80’s when we (me and me mates) used to practice the art, like the racers did.
How long since you bumped one into life?

  2. The last three were solo on a hill, earliest of 3 was 996 and very lucky to achieve as good tarmac and dry, had to be third gear I think. The time before this I aborted (996) as seat was about to get broken from over-enthusiastic helpers! it's hard to look a gift-horse in the mouth under these circumstances.

  4. I think it was probably my ZXR400 about 25yrs ago (the first and last time I ever used the parking light)
2nd gear with my mate pushing me.
Don’t think I’d like to try it on my 1200 multi

  5. Your mission, should you decide to accept it (you know the rest but, when you try, please video it for us all!).

  6. It’s a lost art.

  7. hmm, about a week before i bought the 848. enough was enough. but funnily enough, by the time it was delivered i had diagnosed and rectified the fault on the fugly that had prompted me to replace it.
which i didnt. i loves it.

  9. All the time in my youth....

Not recommended with modern stuff though. It can create a voltage spike and screw your ECU. Or so I was told...

  10. Dare you to bump the v4 when you are at Donny next. Haha.

  12. My friend bought an RS250 last year, he asked me to come and get it started a few months back as he’s been poorly.
It nearly killed me pushing the thing up and down the road, although it is tiny and weighs 3 parts of f### all!!
He was just watching me laughing!!
Turned out I didn’t have the choke fully on.....
Always fancied one but I could hardly get my knackered knees onto the pegs!

  13. Having spent 10 years around race paddocks, more times than o care to mention. Others bikes though mainly, not mine too much.

  14. Are you available for the Donny Ducati day mate? I might need a shove.

  15. I've access to property on hillsides for thirty odd years,so yes bumping down hill only just for crack when in the mood, but not on the flat like the race lads. The first time i did the Ducati i got a lock up with the wrong gear selection.

  16. I’d only had my 400SS a few weeks before the battery went flat. I tried bumping it along the pretty much level street in front of the house but no joy. Then, sudden inspiration struck - use the steep hill at the end of the street. 2/3rds of the way down with a fair speed on I dumped the clutch and........nearly went over the bars as it stopped dead! I then had to push it back up the steep hill (wearing full waterproof gear) and dump it in the garage before driving to the bike shop to buy an Optimate. Lesson learned!
