What's A Decent Respray Going To Set Me Back?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by JohnnySea, Jun 11, 2020.

  1. Time to give the old 749 a respray. Going to stick with the OEM factory look so red all over with the number plate on the rear cowling. Any ideas on what a reputable spray painter is going to charge and any recommendations on where to get the job done within 100 miles of London would be much appreciated.

  2. All the bikes I've had done have been around £1500. But have all been painted and had air brushed decals.

  3. Well I'd hope to come in somewhere south of that then - no airbrushing for me and that can't be cheap.

  4. Generally with spraying, less you pay the less you'll be happy with it IME.

  5. You get what you pay for bud. If you want cheap just go to a car body shop and they will paint your panels for you. Could be as low as £300

Pays ya money and take ya chances

  6. I’d expect somewhere in the region of £350/£500 for a good job.

  7. Oh I'll be delighted if it's anywhere near this.

The whole reason for me asking is that I went to my local dealer he said he could recommend someone who would do an excellent job. When I asked what it was likely to cost he said he hadn't had one done for the best part of 10 years but that last time round it set the owner back around £1,000.

I think he has the best intentions in the world but I've grown a little wary of his referrals because he previously referred me to someone that he highly recommended to have my bike towed and the quote came in at almost double the price of the guy I had sourced independently so I figure I better do my homework and get an independent price.

I'm happy to pay whatever it cost to get as close to a factory finish as I can. if that means paying £1,000 for peace of mind and a good result than so be it but I'm cure there must be members on this forum who have had their fairings sprayed in and around London and who can recommend someone for less.

  9. If it's just one colour the painters I use would charge about 500. Depends on how much prep work there is. It's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string. Last job I had done was a fuel tank that needed quite a bit of work due to some small dents. I paid 200 if memory serves. That was using 2pack paint.

  10. If you’re handy with a piece of sandpaper you could see if they’ll take the pieces you’ve already rubbed down for less cost. Most of the labour/time involved is the prep work

  11. Afraid not!

  12. I follow a guy on Instagram who’s based in Norfolk, have a search for bulldogbodyshop. I’ve not used him but a friend who builds bike frames has had him paint for him. His work looks good, I’m planning to give him a shout myself when I eventually get my 899 resprayed. I’d assume cheaper than someone in London but no idea tbh

  13. I’ve done an online search to try and identify some reputable resprayers and have come up with three that I’ve emailed with details of what work I think is needed. For all 3 I’ve explained that I’m in no rush to get the bike back and that I’m happy to pay cash.

I’ll list the details of the replies as they come in and also follow up with some details around who I decide to go with, why a what the outcome is like. I’ll include photos of course.

  14. Most reputable painters (including car body shops) will be far superior than factory finish - you need an average job to achieve that

  17. I went to dream machine a couple of years ago, about £1100, the quality of the work was very good, but the service was shocking

  18. I used Matt at https://www.1stplacefinish.co.uk/. He does loads of classic and modern exotica and race cars and used to be the main painter for the Honda BAR racing team. The job was for wheels, frame, panels tank, clip-ons, and fuel tank lid and north of £1000 by a reasonable amount. Both he and his other half, Louise, are excellent painters and friends. Certainly worth a call and let them know that I suggested they talk to you. There is no harm in asking.

  19. The only company I have heard many reports of poor quality work (but I haven't had heard recently for a bit of perspective) - the job they did back in the day on my Jack Frost Busa is appalling.
