Does anyone else still have something that works perfectly (electronic) and yet is +30 years old... I was just using my calculator and realised I've had this since I went to Guildford technical college. The mighty Casio FX-180P. It cost me nearly a weeks wages in 1985 and it still works perfectly. Just checked eBay and they are selling for retail.... Hi! I found this on eBay and thought you might like it! Check it out now! Casio FX-180P Programmable Scientific Calculator https://ebay.us/3uri18
My old Lindström cutters broke, so I sent them back under the "no quibble" warranty.... got new pair... not bad service after nearly 40 years of use.
I was on a course there between 77 & 81. Still got my city and guilds certificates somewhere. Hated every minute of it. Mr Ballard is the only lecturer I remember in the electrical engineering dept.
ONC at Guildford ... a little later than you, I started in 1983. I don't remember a single lecturer... strange that... I remember the lessons... boring as F**K. 2 weeks worth of lessons on P and N type doping materials to make a junction... breakdown etc... electron/hole theory... I remember telling the lecturer I'm going to buy a diode or tranny for pennies from not make one.... Electronics was changing so fast then (probably still is). I remember the smells and noises of the refectory, but virtually none of the people. This was in the charts
Another guy in our class had a mk1 escort with a pepped up 1500gt motor. So lunchtimes we would head out and find forestry commission tracks to play on down near gomshall. I was on day release but after all the lessons in the day we had to hang around for some nonsensical lesson about humanities in the evening. Wtf was that about?? Pissed me off big time as I lived out back of Reigate way and after that lesson had finished I had about 10 min to get to Guildford station or I would have 2 hours to kill before the next train then a 3 mile walk home from the station. 4 1/2 years of study and work and I never did get my papers as the company I was with folded and then was filed about by another to get me over the line. Never happened so spent rest of working life bullshtting my way from job to job.
Never regretted the electronics study. Given the time again I'd of liked to have been a builder. MBA (OU) was my biggest waste of time and money... most of my 20's with any spare time i had... self funded... loads of pressure and always late with my TMA's.
I too studied electronics and electrical engineering. ONC, HND then accepted to Glasgow Strathclyde Uni. but by that time I had had enough and wanted back to the real world. Given the time again I would probably do law or finance. Couple of things I keep meaning to stick on Gumtree: Old AVO meter and an "EdiswanE" device. The AVO works but this type is only really suitable for electrics not electronics. The Ediswan makes a noise but I don't fancy trying it out, TBH.
Bloody hell - did electrical ONC around 1976 at Redhill Tech. Used to race my mate's TR6 on my Triton after. Simpler times. Now, where's that old Commodore calculator....
I've got my dad's old electric drill, no idea what make it is, metal body and always a bit worried when i had to use it(last resort if cordless batteries flat) it's at least over 20 years old but still works!!
Bosch SDS drill with hammer action....just over 30 years old...a few weeks back the rear bearing that held up the armature failed....got another one (bearing) delivered for 7 quid...up and running again... Ironically the model starts with "GBH"....awesome...
