959 So My Track Bike Is Just About Finished!

  1. Wheels finally arrived - they are pretty stunning!

And the weight saving is substantial.

Fitted a new set of Metzeler Compk slicks - made ridiculously easy by leaving them in the sun behind glass - get them hot and use some lube guys - it’s the best advice I can give! ;)

  2. That’s what I meant by “wheels”. The weight saving on your spreadsheet was staggering. :upyeah::upyeah:

  3. I know you must all be bored senseless by now - the main point of the thread is to share where weight can be saved.

I still have some Maxton fork cartridges to get fitted but otherwise the bike is finished.

I have my first track day on it at Cadwell on Tuesday - first time on the bike, first time with slicks, first time with tyre warmers!

This is how it turned out.

It’s a real bitsa - but I’m actually quite pleased with the look - even though thats a secondary concern!

  5. British Car Auctions - Peterborough site. They have bike auctions every 2 weeks. Lot’s of the big finance companies use them to offload bikes.

If you know what you are looking for you can pick up a bargain - you would be surprised how many used dealer bikes come from there.

  6. Looks hardcore to me. Enjoy the day, looking forward to hearing how it rides. :upyeah:

  7. The combination of the wheels, cush drive, sprocket holder and sprocket knock over 6kg off the unsprung rotational weight the vast majority at the rear.

I swapped the disc bolts and caliper bolts to titanium as well for a little extra.

I would like to know if race brake discs are lighter as well.

If I’m going to spend any more it’s in that area.

  8. Looks mega mate.
What better bike than a middleweight Panigale for a track project/use of lockdown time.
I'm sure it'll be very special when you roll down the hill before getting released.

  9. Try and find a carbon rear sub frame mate

  10. I’m trying to keep the cost of individual components down - I’m not looking to crash it but I want to explore the limits without having the cost of replacing super expensive bits if I have an off.

I would swap in the motoholders subframe if one came up at the right price - I think they are a kilo lighter than the 1199 one.

Otherwise I’m left with only a few options, 1199 ally tank, lighter exhaust, shit load of titanium.

As @Advikaz suggested - I could remove the crash bungs - maybe just run with the clutch and generator covers and the wheel protection - but not sure I want to risk it.

Moto GP boys don’t run with them and their bikes are flipping all of the time - I can see how they might catch a curb and flip the bike but equally I saw a guy have a low speed slide last year with some fitted and between them and the paddock stand bobbins most of the bike was untouched.

  11. My 'race' discs are actually heavier, thicker I think.
Watch for wear on the cush drives, I think OZ use the same system as Marchesini and they're shyte!

  12. Thanks that’s worth knowing on both counts - might just invest in better pads instead.

  13. The 1199 rear subframe is a fair compromise IMO. The Motoholders is lighter, but they are very fragile!

  14. Nothing wrong with the oem discs IMO. Have you gone to 330mm.
Stock M/C or gone to 19mm?

  15. All stock at the moment. I changed out the fluid for fresh motul racing dot 4 and everything seems pretty solid.

I’m planning on using the rest of the stock pads up and replacing them with better ones.

Z04 seem to be the best but jesus they are pricey. I’m going to run it in and get the suspension / tyre pressures sorted first and then look at the brakes if I feel I need to.

  16. Really nice cost effective and sensible mods I like it, regarding brakes if you get rid of half the abs pump and replace the lines you will get great feel and weight reduction. And maybe go the M4 caliper route for a bit more power on a budget.
I think its in post#8 in my build up thread https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/a-bit-of-a-build-up.69979/

  18. Z04's are good, but plenty of other affordable options.
BSD do a ABS pump delete now, but very expensive, it can be bypassed and pump left in place, which is what the Tri-Options chaps do.
I fitted a RCS19mm M/C to mine, which is nice/worthy upgrade, again, not essential, the Tri-Option boys seem to do ok on the stock one.

NB - The stock rear wheel is a lump! :astonished:

  19. Quick question about the 1199 rear subframe. Did the 959 tank bracket just bolt on straight to the 1199 subframe or did you have to modify the subframe or the bracket?

  20. My favourite mod :):upyeah: Absolutely beautiful. And look at the sub frame I’m holding.
