1199 Panigale......how noisy???

  1. Popped up to Oulton Park at the weekend, a mate was doing a track day, bumped into another mate who was there with Ducati Manchester's 1199 demo bike. They had taken it with the view to getting a feel for it & possibly running one in super stock. The bike was totally standard, but they weren't allowed on the track due to the fact that they couldn't get it to pass the 102db noise test!!!

It appeared to be the engine noise that was causeing the problem, not the exhaust noise.........when a 1198 is tested the meter is well away from the engine so it's not a problem....not so on the 1199!!

    Anybody else had similar issues?

  2. That was the one!! Looks like I'm behind the times!!!!

  3. Utter tosh. Our BSB race bike was only 105dB.....How did they measure it ? The Panigale exhausts exit sideways, so if they hold the microphone like they do for other bikes, at 45degrees to the rear of the bike, it will be like shoving it straight up the exit of the can, and getting the benefit of all the noise pulses at the same time. We will be there testing on a trackday at Oulton on 27th, with Binny and a std road going Panigale....I'll see how its measured then and put them right if they are doing it wrong. The Panigale cans also bounce the noise straight off the ground, so should be measured NOT on tarmac but on sand or earth or a sound absorbent mat.

  4. Feck MSV, just take em to anglesey.......................no problems then.

  5. Didn't see them test the bike, so can't comment on that.....all I know is they couldn't get near to the 102db limit!!

  6. Suffered the same fate at Oulton - tested my Tricolore with baffled termi 6 times each time with bigger baffle system, wadding and even a restrictor with 3/8 inch hole in - went 105-104-105-104-104-104 ...... and worse there was a standard S with standard cans - his read at 106db. The test was done in a compliant manner and the inspector tried everything to help us get it thru including the 45 degrees away from the engine. Did you get yours thru on the 27th ???? I am up for the noise is being generated from something else other than the silencer.

  7. Hi Nog,

Don't forget that 3dB is a logarithmic scale not linear, thus a 3dB increase is technically double the sound pressure.

    For reference:

3 dB = twice the power (Power respectively intensity - mostly calculated)
6 dB = twice the amplitude (Voltage respectively sound pressure - mostly measured)
10 dB = twice the perceived volume or twice as loud (Loudness nearly sensed - psychoacoustics)

  8. Believe the headstock has 104.7 (or something) db at 5500 stamped on it....that's a fail certain then

  9. I saw a Panigale riding on the M25 the other day. Christ, what a racket, the guy was only doing 70 or so, but it sounded worse than the dry clutch models. Not a pleasant sound at all.

  10. Piston slap

  11. I wonder if that was me

  12. Sounds nice from where I'm sitting!!

  13. Can't remember where exactly, but it was somewhere between junctions 12 and 16 (M3 to M40) clockwise. I undertook you in the white van...

  14. I would have only being going clockwise on Sunday....in the rain

  15. It was definitely raining:mad:

  16. Definitely me then, on my way back home to Bristol. I had been in Kent for the weekend, that was the wettest I have ever been on a motorbike :mad:

  17. It was your fault for having a new bike:mad:

Every time I've picked up a new bike I ride home in pouring rain. It's like some kind of unwritten law.

  18. It is a problem, why Termi did not make the slip-ons to retain the valve is beyond me. For UK noise tests you need the valve shut and a decent db killer to help.
Its something we will definitely be providing with our exhaust systems to get you through the test problem.

  19. We did that test before BSB with the std can, and the Oulton Noise Nazi said it was "just under 105"....that was a std road bike with a std system on.
