1260 And Also For 1200 Multi Owners ... Issues With Hands-free Gas Cap?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by john clelland, Jun 22, 2020.

  1. a question for the collective mind:

are the Ducati hands-free electronic gas caps for the Multistrada (SKU: 96680491A)
more reliable than they used to be ... meaning, they do not stop working when you need to put fuel in the bike and end up resorting to removing the bolts that hold the gas cap in place?

I ask this, as I am considering purchasing one for my 1260, but held off the 7 years I owned my 1200s, due to friends at the Ducati factory warning me that the caps sometimes failed (Italian electrical components not being reliable ... who would have thought that possible ;-) ?)

  2. If it stops working taking the bolts out will not solve the issue.
The tank cover has to come off with the filler in place or you will snap the plastic breathers that are hidden.

    Expensive mistake.

  3. I didn't write that it was a cheap solution, now did I? ;)

That said, back to my question: do you have one of these electronic gas caps installed on your Multi, and if yes, is it reliable?

  4. 1200 DVT 2017, I have one, up to now very reliable, I do clean and lubricate often though!

  5. i am hoping the clean and lube comment is about the gas cap ... either way, i am not judging ;-)

  6. I've had the same hands free filler cap fitted to my three Multistradas, a total of 7 years and 46,000 miles - not one problem.

  7. Same here, I had one on my 2010 MY for 8 years, and now on my 1260, never had 1 fail, Really like the convenience of not having to fish the key out

  8. Haha, don't mind either way chief, I'm clean lubed kinda guy! :upyeah::blush:

  9. I’ve had them for 2 years, on a DVT and now 1260. Like the convenience and had no problems.
The guru technician at my local dealer said they have had problems but usually due to heavy handedness and the logic not being understood. Forcing it definitely breaks them !!
It’s something like 5s after the bike is turned off to 30s is the window for opening the cap. If you’re too early or late and it doesn’t easily open he said don’t use any force ... bike on then off again and gently retry.
If it is broken get it recovered to a dealer otherwise as said above it gets expensive

  10. Never had a problem in 10 years.

Italy is Germany first partner for automotive electrical components, maybe they're not so unreliable. The only electrical part that failed on my bike was the alternator, that is made in Japan.

  11. I had one on my 1200s when I bought it and had no issues. I traded up to a DVT 1200s with standard cap but missed the keyless so when I then traded up to my current 1260s the keyless cap was my first buy. No issues with this either :)

  12. got one on my 2015 DVT...zero issues, easy to use as above tho it does get looked after in terms of lube etc

  13. i was kidding ... sort of. ;-)

  14. Do those caps still need to be enabled by a dealer on post DVT stuff ?

  15. I have the same cap that I fitted on my bike in 2010 on my 2012 bike. This did fail to open maybe half a dozen times over the years, which is why I ensured the connector is in an accessible location. Simply unplugging and plugging back in fixed the issue in all but 2 cases. For both of these, the issue was a small tar covered stone got stuck under the hinge side of the lift up flap. Removed that with the end of a tie wrap and all was good.

My 2018 Enduro has one fitted also from new, and has been fine.
For the convenience I'm very happy to have it on both bikes.

I don't buy the Italian electrics bit, given most of the electrics on them are either Japanese or German ;)

@HootOwl, I don't think they ever did need to be enabled, its the grips and spot lights that do.

  17. Why duc can't design this gas cap with the servo latch on the fixed part and simply retaining the keyed hinged cap. Just poorly thought out gimmicky technologies
