I have fitted a scotoiler, keeps the chain oiled when you are riding. I think the steady flow of oil helps keep the chain clean. Only down side a little oil splashes onto the swing arm and tail tidy..
O ring chains should not require lube as such if the O ring is doing its job it will keep the muck out and retain the factory lube, anything vaguely sticky you add will attract and hold grime that will wear the sprockets, either a wax finish or very light oil to prevent corrosion
I have never had to replace a chain on any of my bikes, dirt bikes as well. It is all about the care of the chain. The chain gets very worn if not oiled due to the heat and friction over time. It is kind of like running an engine without oil. Just a matter of time before the metals fail. This is what I have done for years and will continue to do since it has proven to work great. Many of my friends do the same since they used to go through chains like crazy before they asked what I did to preserve my chains. I would never run a chain without lubing it after washing. That is the absolute way to destroy the chain prematurely. It is all about the type of oil used as well. The correct oil used will not fling if applied correctly on the inside of the chain. There are so many oils that are so thick that they make a mess when ridding. The one I use is my go to and has been for years. Easy to find and inexpensive. I oil my chain every two rides, and clean it when it starts to look dirty, probably every 500 to 600 miles or so. I usually do it after washing the bike.
I've used gear oil to lube for many years but the main thing is keeping the chain clean. I clean it after every run out with wd40 and a toothbrush, wipe off dirt and grime with a rag then lube with gear oil and let it sit for 24hrs. I always clean before lubing. I stopped using dedicated chain lubes many years ago as they're too sticky and end up making a grinding paste with road grime. Both my monster and my hyper are both on their original chains with no sign of needing replacing yet. Keep your chain clean, well adjusted & well lubed... you'll be surprised how many years you can get out of it. I also never just change a chain, if I'm changing/replacing the chain i replace BOTH sprockets too.
Surely chains stretch though, Through use and regardless of their care? Beyond the recommended limit as per the service manual should they not be changed?
Of course if it stretches badly. I have to say in all my years of riding and riding aggressive, I’ve never had to change a chain due to stretching. Maybe just lucky I guess?
@jose make one of these that I designed. And collect the kerosene into a container to use or dispose of (shown positioned in second image). The grease-ninja is great had mine one's since 2013/4? Because we live in a very rainy environment we get rust build up quite quicker. So here is the ultimate time saver drill accessory. ps: You fit the greaseninja to the top of most spray cans, I see the one you used is a tappered type can.
