I have vivid memories of meeting in Dublin castle with thousands of other bikers waiting for his funeral car to leave Dublin airport , the traffic corp then rushed us through Dublin all of them on there traffic bikes to make sure we made it the airport to escort the legend home ! A man who traveled in a merc van on his own to help kids in orphanages even though he was about the biggest star in road racing !! Not a word or press conference no twitter bullshit just a great rider and a decent human being !! RIP joey
I can still remember exactly where i were and what i were doing when heard the news 20 years ago. I feel lucky to have watched the great man do the thing he loved the most.... Racing on the roads. A true legend... There will never be another yer maun. Still respected, still missed. RIP joey and thank you for the memories that will stay with me until my dieing day!
After many years of dreaming ,i organised a trip to the TT in 2000 ,so i feel very ,very lucky to have been there to see the legend that was Joey ,win three races that week ,and then to hear the news a few weeks after ,that he was dead,i am not to proud to say brought tears to my eyes , RIP Joey
I was there as well, Joey on the SP1. I have to be honest being a massive DJ fan I was gutted when he broke down but it was still a joy to see Joey win on that beast. DJ and Joey are both heroes to me. RIP fellas.
The only time I saw him race was in a Transatlantic race at Oulton in the early eighties. Believe it or not he was on a sit up and beg. Loved those series of races.
If it was a real old documentary I'm sure it was called the armoy armada all the lads booting around the back roads of northern ireland testing race bikes !!
I was at a race meeting at Silverstone (can't remember what it was) when it was announced over the tannoy system. At least I didn't shoot my fat mouth off like I did when Diana was killed. I knew that if Silverstone announced it, then it was sadly true. I must of seen him riding for Honda Britain at the Transatlantic series. He never set the World alight as I don't think that he ever was a short-circuit scratcher. May of been Brands where I saw him.....
It may have been The Road Racers. That’s a film about the Armoy Armada. Joey, Frank Kennedy and Merv Robinson I think. I believe it’s on YouTube.
this is good viewing with plenty of old footage including the fishing boat mishap Joey Dunlop 1952-2000
