Hi all,,,bored on boat so fluttering about looking at mods etc. Thinking of going down a tooth on front,,,anyone done this?. I'm sure it will smooth out town work .not worried about top end anymore. Thanks in advance. Sean.
IMHO, it’s the single best mod you can do. I’ve always felt the bike was over geared from standard. Removing the 15t front is a nightmare without splitting the chain. It can be done but be prepared to have your patience tested.
I'd like to go down a tooth (front sprocket) on my ST3, to try and get better low-down running. Currently below 3000rpm is a no-go area.
Why not go 42T rear, for me was the way to go, much better manners at lower speeds and you can use 6th as a gear rather than an overdrive! One tooth down at front is like 3 up on the back if I remember!
Thanks for that Bob, just checked and 42t on the rear is std. with my bike so if I change the rear I suppose going up to 44/45 might be the way to go ? Dave
Sorry @thebiglad , was meant for the OP and DVT Mutley, your ST3 the custom set is 15/45 or 14/42, HTH mate
I changed the front sprocket on mine (actually had the dealership do it) and, as has been said, it made a big difference to slow speed/low rev manageability...well worth doing.
I put a 14T on my DVT. It was about 7k after changing the chain and sprockets so I bought a new rivet link and split the chain. Getting the nut off the gearbox drive shaft was a bitch. I had to ride it round to my local garage and use his impact wrench. One thing I noticed was the 7k old front sprocket showed obvious wear, which surprised me. I haven't checked the 14T one yet but really should as it's done about the same now. To get the benefits mentioned above, and they are worth having, the cheapest option is a 14T front sprocket, but when chain change time comes around I think I'll go 15T x 42T on the rear to give the front about 7% less work/wear.
I went 42T on rear on a 1200 DVT. Chain size went up a couple of links. Personally I prefer going up on the rear rather than down on the front. The smaller the sprocket the tighter the chain run.
Put the 14t on my dvt. Excellent change. Did without breaking chain and as said before it was a little fiddly.
yeah 14T front, as above a bit fiddly but doable, much nicer round town, no more slipping the clutch or leaving it in 1st, no appreciable differnce to the top end (in the real world)
