Hi, British expat living in the SF Bay Area of California. I've owned about 10 Ducati's over the last 22 years, from 600SS, 900SS, multiple variants of 748 / 916 (including a Mk 1 Senna that got stolen in Amsterdam), 749 and now Hypermotard 939. This bike is nearly new with only a couple of thousand miles, yet having quite a few teething troubles with it, and the Ducati of North America dealership network is very disinterested and charged me $150 to not fix it on the last visit. (very jerky clutch, low on power, stalling very easily off the line, engine cutting out if running under 2000 rpm in first gear). Today I am in the middle of replacing the front sprocket to a 14 tooth sprocket to improve the low speed characteristics.)
I have a similar age 939 Hyper. No issues like yours - crazy at that age - is there an independent you can go to? I'd sort out what sounds like low-speed fuelling issues before bothering with sprockets...
Thanks. The bike is currently un-rideable at any kind of low speed. Plenty of other owners said the 14 tooth sprocket helped greatly with the low speed performance. Ducati USA said the fueling is correct, other than possibly the EVAP cannister is bad. I swapped it and will test as soon as my chain tensioning tools arrive. The chain is too slack to ride at the moment.
Welcome to the Forum Andrew You say the bike is nearly new, is it still under warranty? In which case I’d insist the dealer sorts the issue. If not then a reputable Indy.
What the dickens,tell us more about the stolen Senna,.....also please load up pic's of those other models that you've owned over the years.
The Hypermotard is still under warranty, the dealer rejected the issues as 'fault cannot be replicated' even though the mechanic said it was terrible. Dealers here don't give a crap about customer satisfaction, they have more customers than they can serve anyway. The Senna was stolen from outside my Amsterdam hotel window during a road trip in Europe. It was a 1999 model, number 164 I think. It was in the middle of a circle of other bikes, all alarmed, and the thieves moved the other bikes out the way and took the Senna from the middle.
That 'customer service' is so shit! There's no doubt you understand what a big V-twin should feel like! Assuming it's identical (though California regs may mean differences) to my standard-gearing 2018 939 Hyper, how is it at exactly 3000rpm in 2nd & 3rd? I've still got my exhaust valve installed and I find this the low-speed sweet spot for in-town 20 & 30mph stuff. My chain's getting a bit slack - that's the only thing making it worse at slow speeds this week...
It won't run at all in 3rd at 20-30mph, the engine will cut out. In 2nd it will be jerky and lumpy. In first it will run, but a bit revvy. at 30mph. Below 20mph in any gear is very hard work, I have to constantly play with the clutch and throttle to stop it lurching around. If I hold 3000 rpm in 2nd or 3rd, it will be lumpy and jerky. It needs 4000 or more to even out the power delivery.
It's clearly fucked, and may have been since birth!! Seems like a good independent is your only choice
